If you have more than one computer at home and have only one internet connection, you might be wondering how to use internet in both the computer.
Let’s assume there are two computers A and B. Computer A runs on Windows Vista and Computer B runs on Windows XP.

Computer A is connected to Internet via cable, so this will be connected through a LAN card. Now to connect computer B, you will need another LAN card in computer A or if you want to connect to more than one computer, you will need a wired hub.

First let me explain how to connect two computers in LAN.

Step 1: In Vista, before doing this you should enable Sharing and Discovery. You can do that by going to Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center. Under the section ‘Sharing and Discovery, enable Network discovery, File Sharing, Public folder sharing and others if you want to. (See picture below)

Network Sharing

Here, first network represents connection to internet and second one the local connection with another computer.

Step 2: If your LAN card that is connecting to another computer is installed, it will be shown under Control Panel -> Network Connections.

Step 3: Right click that local area connection and click properties.

Step 4: Under the tab ‘Networking’, click the properties Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).

Step 5: Click the radio button to ‘Use the following IP’ and give an IP address (For example, IP address: 192.168.0.1 and Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0)

Step 6: Don’t give any other information, Click Ok and close everything.

Step 7: In computer B, make sure you enable the LAN card which is used to connect to computer ‘A’. Here you need not give any IP information as Computer ‘A’ will assign an IP address dynamically. If it’s not working make sure there are no IP assigned and change the properties to ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’.

Step 8: Test the connection by pinging. (You can do this by typing ping 192.168.0.1 or whichever is Compter ‘A’s IP in the comand prompt)

Sharing the Internet connection of computer ‘A’ with computer ‘B’:

Right click LAN card which is connected to Internet under Control Panel -> Network Connections and click ‘Sharing’ tab and enable both the options to share Internet. (Note: Unless there is another enabled LAN setting you will not be able to see the shared tab under properties)

Click Ok and close. This option is given by the Windows OS known as ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).

Now you can use Internet from both Computer A and Computer B from a single connection.

Note: You can also setup password protected internet sharing, if you insist in privacy. Read more about in the comment by Termino and following comments.

Thanks! If had only read your tips 2 days before.. Spend 2 days figuring it out. Not. Even contemplated buying a Router and 4 USB adapters (total cost about 500 euro). Now it works like a breeze.
      I’ll bookmark this site.

I need help on step by step configuring out A and B computers using both Windows XP on how to connect pc-A to the internet through another pc-B, but pc-B is using only wireless USB network adapter. PC-A and PC-B is connected with 4-port wired router hub. They’re both setup link already. But I need help step by step setup direction. Any one could help me?

    7. 7 Matt

how do you get Public folder sharing and printer sharing on Read only, not password required? there is no option for me that will allow free access, only password -_- i hate vista so much.

p.s my internet sharing isnt working at all. both computers can ping each other, both computers sending and recieving, vista(internet host) can view files on XP leech computer, XP cant access Vista AT ALL yet can ping etc..

internet sharing is enabled for the right connection..

my lord im actually a little suicidal over this. =\

    8. 8 Nick

ok, everything is set up. ICS and ICF are enabled on pc-b and automatically shows the (LAN) Local Area Network. The pc-B has a ping status of 192.168.1.1 on Default Gateway and IP of 192.168.1.4, which the computer automatically obtained and I leave it blank. The pc-A and pc-B is sharing folders and I can transfer files/folders. But the only thing is when I click Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox2, Netscape Navigator V9.0b2 on pc-A, isn’t that supposed to go through pc-B and access internet? I have Zone Alarm and Norton Internet Security 2007, plus the Win XP Firewall (ICF) enabled. ZoneAlarm, I configured to access trusted Zone for LAN accessible folders. Folders are showing and linking to both pc-A & pc-B. PC-B is using wireless USB network adapter and accessible through internet. But pc-A can’t get access through the Internet passing through pc-B first. Both computers are using Windows XP. Anyone could help me? Let me know.

    17. 17 Peter White

I used to have a desktop and a laptop (wireless) set up where both standalone machines could access the internet independetly.. I decided (?) to set up a network so I could transfer files between them.. So this is all working ok and both can access to the internet…

The problem is unless the desktop is on the laptop cannot access the internet even though it sees the wireless network (which has been renamed slightly) it will not connect unless the desktop is on ..????????

Both are XP Desktop Cat 5 to router
      Laptop Wireless /….

      Thanks.. PT

    18. 18 Mr.Byte

@Peter White, Actually you could have transferred files even when you had independent access to internet through the router…I mean like what you had in the beginning…Only thing is that you got to enable file sharing and put your files in shared folders…So you will be able to access the shared files from other computers which use the same router…

So, I can connect to my brooadband connection from my computer, but I can’t connect it from my friend’s laptop..
can someone help me by saying how can I connect from my friend’s laptop??? what should I do?

    22. 22 Sumit Goel

I want to connect another computer via internet like my computer in delhi and another computer in Gurgaon so how can i connect the computer please tell me

    23. 23 Mr.Byte

@Sumit Goel, You have to use remote desktop connection through internet. You may not be able to use the full feature of remote desktop in OS like Vitsa Basic or Premium. But with Vitsa Ultimate or Business you will be able to experience all the features.
Also you can use features like GoToMyPC.com etc…these may be easier but comes with a cost…

    24. 24 Ameeruddin

i have two computers and one bsnl broad band connection.
i want to share the internet connection in second computer using lan cards.
the computer which has the net connection is installed with windows server 2003 sp2 and the second computer has windows xp as operating system.
      how do i share it?

    25. 25 Melissa

This is very useful, except i need it the other way around. Where computer A has XP and is trying to share with computer B which has Vista.
I would appreciate it very much for your help.

    26. 26 Abby

thank you for that useful tip :)but i have another question:i have Road Runner at home, and it’s in my laptop already, and my laptop has a wireless signal thing built in it.but then i took roadtrip to another state to my aunt’s house, and she has comcast :O i wanted to connect to her network with her modem, but it wouldn’t work. i tried turning off the modem, unplugging the cable, wait 10secs, then put it on againthat didn’t worki reseted the local area connection thing, but still..then, i tried connecting to her broadband connection ISP thing with her username and password, but it didn’t work..soo, how do you connect to a different network of someone else’s with a different computer?how do i change the firewall settings?

    27. 27 Mr.Byte

@Melissa, Most of the things should be the same. In XP, you have to enable Internet Sharing Mode and you should be able to work it through.

    28. 28 Mr.Byte

@Abby, It may be for lots of reasons… There maybe a limit to which the number of computers connected to the wireless modem at a time. In some cases, the machined ids maybe registered and you can try getting internet by using LAN card. Or try connecting your computer to the modem using LAN card for the first time and then try using wireless…These are some that I can think of and it varies highly depending on the ISP, so the best would be to contact them…Hope this helps…

    29. 29 TheOtherWay

      Hey,

Really neat post - but what about the other way? I actually have a laptop which runs Vista and a desktop running XP. For some unbeknownst reason, I can’t connect to my landlady’s DSL connection (broadcasted wirelessly) through Vista; however, I can connect to it using my desktop (running XP).

I do have a cross-wire cable to directly connect the two for a LAN connection…but how do I configure the settings so I can share my internet connection on the desktop (XP) to the laptop (Vista)?

in my system i am having 6 usb port and one lancard

i have shared my internet connection with (desktop pc) usb port adsl broadband connection i make a dail up

please help me step by step and give me link of website to get help and step by step

    38. 38 Mr.Byte

@mdsami, You can use the same article to connect. First connect Computer A with USB and make sure internet is working. Connect computer B with LAN card and opt for ICS (Internet connection sharing). Now Computer A will act like a server and follow the same steps in the article. You should be able to connect.

    39. 39 Nick

Hi, still can’t get access to the internet from my PC-A but the PC-B is excellently accessing the internet. Ok, the host PC-B is using a wireless USB adapter, which the properties of obtain automatically an IP address and the DNS server too. On host PC-B, if I enabled ICS on properties of Wireless USB adapter (an external adapter - the one that gets to the internet), the internal network adapter will automatically obtain an IP address of 192.168.0.1 , it’s programmed that way, and the DNS server is blank. The ICF is not enabled yet until everything is ready. But I have ZoneAlarm Firewall installed both PC-A and PC-B and is configured accessing trusted zone, which are showing each other’s data file and can transfer date files and folders to each other.

Now, in pinging to each other, if the PC-A (client computer), the network adapter’s properties is in obtain automatically and the DNS server, that can’t get ping to the host computer (PC-B) the same as the client computer (PC-A). I tried to ping each other but both don’t reply pinging each other because the client computer is on obtained IP address automatically. If I obtained IP address manually on the client computer (PC-A) such as 192.168.0.x (where x from 2 to 254, your choice), and the default gateway and the preferred DNS is on 192.168.01 and the alternate DNS server must not be the same the last octet number which must be the IP address of the wireless USB adapter (but not sure this alternate DNS server why?), they do both get pinging to each other, the host computer and the client computer. They do both replying and pinging to each other. The good thing is on the client computer on the task bar lower right hand corner it appears the icon connection wireless internet connection from the host computer. But the problem is the PC-A client computer still can’t get access to the internet through PC-B host computer in sharing one internet line.

It shows in the indicator top right corner of ZoneAlarm. It says listening to port numbers on Trusted Zone only and is accessible data transfers to both computers. Have no idea on the alert logs Viewer Tab Menu, there is a chart on Firewall or the program tab. There is also indicates each TCP or Program tells also if is being block or allowed on outgoing or incoming and have no idea where to access to allow. Only I can control the program on the program menu tab that what softwares or device or the program files to allow or block on the internet access or internet server. Anyone, knows about ZoneAlarm? Anyone knows about troubleshooting after ICS is enabled? Let me know. Thanks.

    40. 40 bhavani prasad

hi,sir i under standed that sharing between com A and com B with two lan cards and one interface (cat5 cable).
my com A having ip address with having dns and gateway, this is host com. And where should i give the ip which you told 192.168.0.1 and sub 255.255.255.0. If i removed my ip and give this ip,in host pc also i am not getting internet. And i am using xp in both computers. (i am using totally 3lan cards perfectly instaled, i am getting file sharing in my both pc’s working fine.)

    41. 41 Nick

      Bhavani Prasad:

Using windows XP on both ComA and ComB with using only one router hub.

Com A must have 2 Lan cards, 1-A Lan card (external LAN card) must connect to DSL modem. 1-B Lan card (internal LAN card) connect to router hub. Com B has one LAN card and connect CAT 5 cable to LAN card going to router hub.

1A Lan card (that connects to the DSL modem to access internet) properties on TCP/IP properties both obtain IP address and DNS server address must be on obtain automatically. On LAN connection properties, there are General, Authentication, and Advanced Tab. Click the Advanced Tab. You’ll see the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Check the box on “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection.” Then there will show a second box that you must choose the second 1B LAN card (that’s Local Area Connection). Since or if you check the box on ICS, it will automatically create 192.168.0.1 on the second 1B LAN card’s TCP/IP properties on IP address (192.168.0.1)and subnet (255.255.255.0). I’m positive you are ready to access the internet for Com A.

On Com B’s LAN card, for the properties , you must create an IP address; for the IP address, subnet, and default gateway. IP address is 192.168.0.x (where x is from 2 to 254, your choice). Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. The Preferred DNS server and the default gateway must be the same which is 192.168.0.1. The Alternate DNS server must be the IP address of the host computer’s 1-A LAN card’s TCP/IP (IP address) properties by checking the status (on the support tab) or by typing it on DOS command windows, ipconfig and then press enter. I’m sure you will enjoy and have fun. Enjoy the fun.

    42. 42 Nick

      BHavani Prasad:

Or if you want telephone line goes to the DSL modem then DSL modem goes to router hub then if you have 8 or 4 ports of router hub, connect all com A and com B to the router hub ports and all or both can go to internet and can even transfers and shares files and folders. There is no host computer. each computer has only one LAN card and both is obtain IP address automatically. But you need each computer must have third product firewall to prevent from hackers accessing your computer. Use any firewall product softwares, ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, and etc. I’m sure you will enjoy everything. Enjoy the fun!!!

    43. 43 Nick

      Bhavani Prasad:

if your Com A (host computer) has a third product software firewall. You need to adjust it to Medium so the Com B can access to the internet. Also, you can click the box in the ICF (Internet Connection Firewall). If the Com B can’t get access to the internet then uncheck the box on the ICF. But your host will be vulnerable and expose to the internet normally and naturally but Internet Zone cannot shared files and folders on your Com A only your Com B. Ok enjoy the fun.

    44. 44 Harsh

      Dear Sir,
I want to connect two laptops running Vista Home Premium (Comp -A)and Windows Xp (Comp-B).Comp A will connect to internet via USB port and it will connect to Comp B via ethernet port.
Now when i try to setup connection as per ur guide the Comp B does not Get the IP assigned automatically.thus the connection does not get setup.even pinging does not work. I want to connect both the Laptops to internet using one modem only.

      Plzz Reply.

    45. 45 Mr.Byte

@Harsh, As per step 7 make sure that ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’ is selected. I believe if thats the case it should work if that LAN card in your computer is working properly. (Try connecting computer B to internet directly and confirm if its LAN card is working)
Or else try to give the IP manually and check if it works. In case if you had given 192.168.0.1 as the IP in your computer A, give 192.168.0.2 in your computer B and give the same subnet mask.

    46. 46 Harsh

ThanX for the reply. My connection got setup as per ur guide ie the IP got assigned automatically. But I am unable to connect to Internet via Comp B ie the XP Comp.I can even see internet gateway on Comp B ,but on entering an address in IE it gives error that server cannot be found. Plz Help.

      Dear Sir,
I crashed (by virus, my virus protection didn’t work) my Dell Dimension 2350/Intel celeron. I reinstalled everything, but it just never quite operated the same. It’s a Windows XP home edition with 2 cd drives and 1 floppy. I purchased a refurbished Dell 2CPU Windows XP professional 1 - 2CPU. The 2nd computer just has a ROM cd drive. What I want to know is: Can I somehow connect the 2 towers together so that the 2 cd drives can be used. I do all my banking on line…but mainly use my computer to download or scan or save pictures from my camera or emails or play games on the internet. Occasionaly,I do research. I have no way at this time to transfer any files to a c/d (for back-up files). My husband says this can’t be done. IF it can’t be done, then just tell me. Sometimes he says that, because he either doesn’t know, or doesn’t want to be bothered. The only thing I want to use from the old computer is the ability to save and copy to CD’s. I have plenty of room to have the towers stay intact and within a few inches of each other. Would the drives need to be removed from the “old” tower? We DO have a ‘Netgear’ connected between my husbands and my NEW computer. The computers operate independently of each other. We also are connected to the internet via CABLE.

    50. 50 Luthien

I have a question that isn’t covered in this explanation. I did all this yesterday between two desktops, one vista home and the other xp SP2.

The problem was when I made the vista machine my host and shared, it conflicted IP’s with the hub itself, even though it was obtained automatically. So I labeled it 192.168.0.## (# = just a random number under 100), but then it wouldn’t locate the internet. The conflicting IP’s is a problem because the five port hub / gateway has a host IP. I’ve tried labeling both IP’s on the computers different too and that helps nothing. Any explanations as to what now?

    51. 51 gaurav

      thanks,
      but i have two pc
on com1 i have install xp.
      and the com2 have vista.
      i connect internet on com1.
& i want to share this internet on comp2.
but i can’t find network setup wizard in vista

    52. 52 Gagsy

      Hi,
I am facing a problem hope i will get a solution here :) I am having two laptops running Vista,I would like to share the internet(BSNL) from a single internet connection
and I want both the laptops to run irrespective of the other.. even if one of the laptop is switched off.. other should run(I don’t want one laptop to be server and another to be client)
I am having a ADSL2 modem/router and a 8-port switch,I have connected the modem/router to the telephone line and then the modem/router is connected with one port of the switch.
Two laptops are connected with two more ports of the switch.
All the settings are same in both the laptops expect the ip address.
I was only able to access internet from any one of my laptop at a time.. and not from both the laptops.

I haven’t created a work group yet.. will that be the only problem.. else should i do some thing else.
      Thanks in advance.

    53. 53 Nick

      Gagsy,

      Hi,

Here is what you do. If you want none of them is client or server, just sharing files and folders only. That is fine. About your router, it doesn’t matter whether it’s wireless or wired port router. In your laptop, just leave the ip address in automatically obtain ip address and the server. You want to use wired router, just use the RJ45 cable and plug it in the port, all the laptop. That is only shared files and folders and even both or more laptops can go to internet in one line, but all of them can go to internet. This situation is only if your laptop has no wireless.

But if you want wireless router, the same thing, no need to plug wire (RJ45). Your wireless laptop will detect your wireless router and just click connect to that wireless router when it’s being detected. You are done. But it’s up to you whether you want to give password or create password on your router. If you want to put a password, then the other user of laptop has to know the password too. Each time you add laptop and desktop computer, the other user has to know the password. Listen, if you decided not to put password on your router, each laptop must have a third party firewall products activated instead of using the firewall of the Vista and it’s better. I’m using the Zone Alarm firewall has a better firewall, simple software and very easy to use. If you use Zone Alarm or other firewall products, make sure on the other firewall products or the Zone firewall product, let your laptop or computer knows that you are sharing files & folders by entering their IP address to one another. So your laptop will recognize each other and can communicate each other. I’m using zone alarm it’s very easy to use and enter their IP address or subnet ip address. I’ve done this already. So, enjoy the fun of learning things out.

Hi,i shared my internet connection and i benifit from your instructions, but i still have a problem,
Is that anyway to put a password for connecting to computer A??
i have a broadband connection, and i shared this connection like u said, but now, every users of the same network place can access my internet connection and use it. My friend stop his account but his cable still attached to the switch hub, and now he can use my internet connection, and i dont want him to use it, i tried the firewall than i lost internet connection on pc B. i need a way to make internet connection shared with password, which means, if i want to connect to internet from pc B, i need the password to do it, in this way my friend could not use my connection anymore.
thanks for your time, plz help.

    55. 55 Mr.Byte

@Termino, try using the password protect under Network and Sharing center (you can see the image in the post). But to access, you may have to login using the credentials of your current computer. If you prefer not to use that, you may create another user and ask your friend to use those credentials.

    56. 56 Termino

Thanks Mr.Byte for the information, but i still need somthing please.
where could i set this password?
Under the Network sharing center i could find, only, turn on password protect sharing, turn off password protect sharing, i cant find set password. so what password should i use??? plz

    57. 57 Mr.Byte

@Termino, you have to create a new user in your computer. (I have an article written earlier about this and it may not answer directly but it helps). When your friend tries to access your computer, he will be asked to enter the credentials. Use the user id and password you have just now created. It should work after that.

    58. 58 Termino

Thanks Mr.Byte for your time :). It works, this is a great site, thankssssssssssssssssssss

    69. 69 Nick

      Seshu,

How to connect to the Internet through another computer in one line connection?
Which one are you doing, wired router connection or wireless?

I will guess only what you’re doing. Ok if your Computer A is your host (the one that goes to the internet) and Computer B is your client (the one that shares or hop in to one line internet on computer A).

To ping each other, make sure each other is responding the connection to each other is the point or purpose of ping. Here is what you do, Comp A is 192.168.6.36 and Comp B is 192.168.6.37 as you said. Facing the screen on Comp A, you ask the Comp B by typing its IP address 192.168.6.37 and press enter. If comp B is responding to Comp A, you know that is good and it should be that way. Do the same, vise versa if you are facing Comp B, type the Comp A’s ip address. Now, you can tell if one of them is not responding. If the other computer is not responding, make sure the firewall on windows is deactivated, use a third party firewall product is better because you have the way of controlling the firewall and the other computer will respond back to each other by entering each other’s ip address, so that both comp A and comp B will recognize each other and communicate better and check the network card’s properties (the Local Area Connection small window) on IPX/SPX/netBIOS, Make sure IPX/SPX/NetBIOS is added on your protocol besides Internet Protocol (TCP/IP). So that when you do the ping both will respond smoothly and you can share files and folders and play games to each other’s comp A and comp B too.

On your Comp A makes sure the third party firewall product is on the middle not on the highest point of stealth mode security zone, so that the Comp B can go through the Internet line of comp A. On comp B, you can adjust it to the highest point of stealth mode security zone as long as you enter the ip address of comp A from your third party firewall product. Now, I’m sure they are pinging to each other. I’m sure that will absolutely work. Enjoy the fun

    70. 70 Nick

      Seshu,

If you don’t have third party firewall product, just he windows operating system but make sure it’s deactivated first, then next check your protocol make sure IPX/SPX/NetBIOS is added up to your protocol besides Internet Protocol TCP/IP. After added up. You can set back the firewall of your windows operating system. Everything will work fine. Enjoy the fun.

HELLO NICK IAM WITING FOR YOUR REPLY….

LASTLY FIRE WALL TURNED OFF ALSO…

      NO RESPONDING…

      HOW CAN I DO?????????

    73. 73 Nick

      Seshu,

How to make connection? Let’s start from the beginning. From Comp A’s network card (LAN card) port, plug and connect the RJ-45 cable from your Comp A going to your router port switch hub on port number 1. On Comp B, plug the RJ-45 cable from Comp B going to port number 2.

Let’s start all over. I haven’t experienced windows xp home edition. I have experienced in Windows XP Professional version, which is better. But I think it will do the same situation connection same as the Windows 98 too but far more better and excellent in Windows Vista. Ok, now, If you reinstall again your Windows XP it will ask you to double check if you wanna make changes or add protocol in network card properties. Either you add the IPX/SPX NetBIOS protocol besides the Internet protocol TCP/IP when you reinstall windows XP or add it later after you installed the Windows XP. The IPX/SPX NetBIOS is to enable share file and folders and ping responding smoothly and able to communicate between two computers connected by a router hub. Router is designed to connect to the internet line not the network hub. Network hub is use for the network within the whole place inside office or house but can be hook up to the router hub port and connect to the internet too.

Let’s say you installed the Windows XP. Both comp A and Comp B is now connected and plugged in with router hub. Remember you must add the protocol IPX/SPX NetBIOS to Comp A and Comp B so that both will respond each other when you ping their ip address. Some network card don’t respond without IPX/SPX NetBIOS protocol until only I add that protocol. That protocol also, you can use to play games between two computers.

Just follow the direction what I told to Bhavani Prasad on that website. You will get it. It’s there on that page. Just scroll up the page on that website. I’m sure it will work for you too and enjoy learning. If you have any question, just ask. Enjoy your day and learning new stuff.

    74. 74 Nick

      Seshu,

I got your point. Just read the one I gave instruction to Bhavani Prasad on March 20, 2008 here in this page. There is another way of connecting through internet by using wireless USB adapter if you are using wireless router

If you are using wired router port, then follow the instruction I have given to Bhavani Prasad here in this page just scroll up this page and read them all. That is the procedure and the way to connect Comp B to Comp A through the internet. Also, how to ping each other’s Comp A and Comp B too. Just try your best to follow the instructions there and you will get them. If you have any question, just ask. Enjoy your day and learning.

    77. 77 seshu

      HELLO NICK….

      WHER IS YOUR REPLY….

    78. 78 Nick

      Seshu,

Remove the IPX/SPX/NetBIOS from your Comp B. Because the Windows Vista does not have that IPX/SPX/NetBIOS protocol. I just looked and tried to do the same as yours but my Comp A is my laptop Host as my Windows Vista. I’m doing the same thing as yours. My Comp-A Host is my laptop (Windows Vista) and my 4 desktop computers as my Comp-Bs which is Windows XP.

I know Windows XP in networking but I tried today my Windows Vista as my Host in my Dad’s laptop. I know very much how the sharing files and folders and using one line internet of Comp B sharing the line of Comp A by activating the ICS on LAN card-2 properties of Comp A. Now, it is happening also to me that when I face my Computer A and check the Comp B by typing the ip address of Comp B which 192.168.0.2. It does reply the Comp B. But when I face the Comp B and type 192.168.0.1, my Comp A is not responding (the laptop Windows Vista). I activated the ICS in LAN card B of my Comp A so that Comp B and Comp A will communicate each other

Your Comp A and the same as my Comp A laptop is not responding too. When you hooked up or plugged in everything, the windows vista will detect all automatically, except by doing manually of activating the ICS and enter ip address on LAN card-B. The LAN card-1 or wireless card or USB wireless adapter’s properties is set into automatically obtain IP address and leave it like that.

Now two of us has problem and I’m going to ask also to Mr LyteByte

    79. 79 Nick

      Mr. LyteByte,

How are you doing? Enjoying good business? Cool. Anyway, me and Seshu have the same problem. I’ll do it short.

My Comp A is 192.168.0.1 - wireless laptop windows Vista.
My Comp B is 192.168.0.2 - desktop Windows XP

      To ping each other:
When I face my Comp A to check the Comp B by typing: ping 192.168.0.2 and press enter, it did reply.
when I face my Comp B to check the Comp A by typing: ping 192.168.0.1 and press enter, it did not reply, 4 times said:

      Request timed out.
      Request timed out.
      Request timed out.
      Request timed out.

The ICS and on the Sharing Discovery - Network Discovery, File sharing, password protected sharing are set to “on”. The ICS on LAN card-B properties on under Sharing Tab is checked box (Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection) on Comp A. Wireless (LAN card-A) is set to obtain IP address automatically.

Any idea why Comp A is not responding? Me and Seshu got the same problem and got question for you. Let us know. thanks.

      Seshu,

Your welcome sweet Seshu. My pleasure.

    83. 83 SESHU

      HELLO.

MY MR.BYTE WAITING FOR YOUR BETTER REPLY ABOUT THIS PROBLEM.

      O.K.

    84. 84 Nick

      Seshu,

Hey, how are you doing? Still waiting for my reply sweetie?

      Ok, here is it.

On Comp A, on LAN-card-1 (wireless or wired) properties, the ICS is always in LAN-card-1 properties and it’s always activated in LAN-card-1 properties. It doesn’t show the tab “SHARING” there, until you add a protocol either IPX/SPX/NetBIOS (only in Windows XP) or Reliable Multicast Protocol (only in Windows Vista). This is which one do you want to be the Host Computer A, is it the Windows XP or Windows Vista. Tha’s up to you. It’s our or your choice.

If you want Windows Vista to be the Host Comp A, then choose and add the “Reliable Multicast Protocol” (that’s in the properties of LAN-card-1 (wireless or wired) besides the Internet Protocol Version4 (TCP/IPv4), That is the external card (LAN-card-1) the one that connects to the internet. Then click ok to exit everything so the “Sharing” tab will appear on next step. When you go back to the properties of the LAN-card-1 you’ll see the “Sharing” tab. Click that “Sharing” tab, under that (ICS) Internet Connection Sharing check the box in front of “Allow other network users to connect throught this computer’s internet connection”. Click ok. That’s it and next…

Check it out on LAN-card-2 on Comp A if it is automatically create an IP address and subnet for you. If not then go to LAN-card-2 of Comp A, go to the properties of the “Internet Protocol Version4 (TCP/IPv4): click that properties.
Enter for IP address: 192.168.0.1 and press tab it will appear automatically print out for you the subnet mask: 255.255.255.0. That is it, just click ok and exit and reboot computer to take effect the changes.

Oh sorry by the way, On Comp B (Windows XP), you must add the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS protocol besides the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) on the LAN-card properties, so that both computer will communicate smooth and better. If not they will not share files and folders and games. Next, create their ip address and enter:

      (o) Use the following IP Address:
      IP Address: 192.168.0.1
      Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
      Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

      (o) Use the following DNS Server Addresses:
      Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
Alternate DNS Server: Whatever is in the LAN-card-1 IP address on Comp A

After that click ok to exit everything and reboot the computer to take effect those changes and your done. Later after the reboot, activate the firewall of the windows vista. If you have a third party firewall product it’s even better will protect you like the Zone Alarm Firewall is better and easy to use and easy to control for every software.

If you use third party firewall product makes sure you enter each other’s ip address and subnet to each other’s Comp A and Comp B, so they can recognize each other. Thats on the location of firewall menu entering their ip address.

Ok sweetie, I just worked it out my Comp A and Com B and it is working in mine now too. So enjoy your networking and have fun learning. Good day.

    85. 85 Nick

      Seshu,

Oh, forgot something. On Comp B on LAN-card on Internet Protocol TCP/IP properties. The IP address is supposed to be 192.168.0.2. If you have more computer to add, just add like this for every computers:

      192.168.0.2
      192.168.0.3
192.168.0.4 and so on…The others are all the same.

      Have a nice day Seshu…..

      WAITING FOR YOUR REPLY…

    91. 91 Nick

      Seshu,

Sorry, I mentioned activate the firewall after reboot. Don’t activate firewall yet. Make sure Comp A and Comp B are responding or pinging to each other first. Don’t activated or install any firewall product yet. You activate or install the firewall only when Comp A and Comp B are pinging or responding to each other.

For Windows Vista (Host Computer A):
On LAN-card 1 properties (external card that connect to Internet) on Comp A leave it as “obtain ip address automatically”. But make sure the protocol “Reliable Multicast Protocol” is added in the properties protocol of LAN-card 1, so the “sharing” tab will show up, so you could activate ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). So Comp A and Comp B can connect and communicate to each other.

On Lan-card 2 properties on Comp A must look like this and must always look like this and don’t change on our or your likeness numbers. It’s the Microsoft Corp and maker of network card who program like that. So follow the step by step. On LAN-card 2 properties on Comp A must be on Internet Protocol Version4 (TCP/IPv4) properties should look like this:

      (o) Use the following IP Address:
      IP Address: 192.168.0.1
      Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

It must be like that. It must be programmed like that. Hey, don’t take it personally, it’s a push to understand.

On LAN-card properties on Comp B (for Windows XP) should look like this:

      (o) Use the following IP Address:
      IP Address: 192.168.0.2
      Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
      Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

      (o) Use the following DNS Server Addresses:
      Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
Alternate DNS Server: Whatever is in the LAN-card-1 IP address on Comp A

Try to ping each other’s ip address number for Comp A and Comp B. I’m sure your Comp A can go to Internet. I’m sure you are done here. If your both Comp A & Comp B is still crazy. Hey, I’m ma jump to the cliff and it’s done, he,he,he, lol. Just a joke only. Enjoy learning stuff like this but hey, this is tough. Just enjoy…

      HEY NICK..

      I AM CHOOSING I.P ADDRESSES FIRST 192.168.0.1 THAT’S IS I THINK ‘C’ CLASS. O.K.

IF WHENEVER NOT RESPONDING COMP B..
CHANGE TO I.P ADDRESSES ‘B’ CLASS. IF POSSIBLE OR NOT JUST CHECKING..

      THAT IS ALSO NO RESPONDING..

FIRSTLY THIS I.P ADDRESSESS I GIVE 192.168.0.1 ‘C’ CLASS I.P ADDRESS MORE TIMES GIVEN ..

WHENEVER MY TOPIC IS STARTING I AM CHECKING THIS I.P ADDRESSES TO.

YESTERDAY ONLY JUST CHAGE TO ‘B’ CLASS I.P ADDRESS . WHY BEACAUSE IF RESPOND OR NOT..

      NO RESPONDING ……..

AGAIN I AM SPPEDLY CHANGING TO BACK AGAIN ‘C’ CLASS I.P ADDRESS..
      THAT IS 192.168.0.1.

THIS IS U CHOOSING BEFORE AND BEFORE POST …

      ———-

      O.K NICK I CAN TRY AGAIN…

YOU SAID FIRE WALL TURN OFF…
THAT’S THOSE IN COMPUTERS ARE ??? OR .?????????

      OR ONLY COMP A ???????(VISTA)

OR ONLY COMP B ????????(XP PROFESSIONAL).

    93. 93 Nick

      Seshu,

Both Comp A and Comp B must turn off the firewall for Windows Vista and Windows XP. Don’t install any third firewall product yet. If you have installed it just removed it, uninstall it first. Make sure both computer are responding to each other.

Listen, On host Computer A (Windows Vista is host) needs two network cards [LAN-card-1 (wired or wireless) and LAN-card-2].

On LAN-card-1 (wired or wireless external card that goes to internet) on properties leave it “obtain IP address automatically.”
On LAN card-2 (internal card that connects to the port of wired router or hub network) so that it shares files and folders and play games with the additional protocol “Reliable Multicast Protocol” on properties. On properties of TCP/IPv4 enter these:

      (o) Use the following IP Address:
      IP Address: 192.168.0.1
      Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

On Computer B (Windows XP) client computers, it has only one LAN-card. In the properties, you must add a protocol IPX/SPX NETBios only, so you will get a best response and communication to both computers. In the properties of Internet protocol TCP/IP enter these:

      (o) Use the following IP Address:
      IP Address: 192.168.0.2
      Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
      Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

      (o) Use the following DNS Server Addresses:
      Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.0.1
Alternate DNS Server: Whatever is in the LAN-card-1 IP address on Computer A

It works great in my computers when I just did it and figure this out, same as Windows XP in both computers with one is Host (Computer A) with 2 network cards and one is client (Computer B). So, as the same with Windows Vista (Host Comp A) with 2 network cards and Windows XP is client (Comp B) with one network card.

If it is responding you don’t need to reboot both computers. If not, you have to reboot both computers after you just setup everything to take effects the setup.

Now, try to ping each other. I’m sure it will reply.

Make sure both computers are responding first before installing the third party firewall product. On firewall, If you use third firewall product, use only that and turn off the firewall on windows vista (but the firewall will tell you to turn off automatically or manually). So you’ll know what to do. Same also, in windows XP, because it will conflict only. Enter their ip address to each other so they both recognize each other. I’m sure it’s working now.

Enjoy your day learning on networking.

      HI.. NICK.

I AM DOING AGAIN WHAT YOU SAID..
BUT I AM USING IN VISTA THAT IS HOST IN KAPERSKY INTERNET SECURITY 2009. IN THERE IS FIRE WALL.. THERE IS NO OPTION FIREWALL DISABLE..

IF IN DISABLE FIREWALL TOTAL SECURITY DISABLED.
IF DISABLES AFTER THEN COMPUTER INFECTED ????

      HOW CAN I DO??

      ————

IN COMP B IN LAN CARD PROPERTES ADD PROTOCOL NETBIOS/IPX/SPX/NETBIOS SETTINGS

    95. 95 Nick

      Seshu,

Ok good, on Windows Vista Comp A, the firewall is disabled and turn off your wireless router. You can turn on that wireless router later when the two computer A and Comp B are responding or pinging to each other. I’m sure your Windows Vista is you can always go and surf the web internet anytime you want, right? If so, that is good. First, we are going to reset the program device driver of your LAN-card-2 by uninstalling your device driver of your LAN-card-2 by going to the control panel.
      On the Control panel screen:
      1. on the left column you’ll see Control Panel Home and Classic View. Click the Classic view.
      2. Wait until those Icon program shows up all in the right side. When all icon shows up, look for the System Icon and double click that System.
      3. On the left side column, click the Device Manager, the windows will ask your permission, just click continue, wait until the Device Manager small windows screen appears. When they appears, select the network adapter by one clicking the positive sign (to uncollapse items) in front of network adapter. right click on the Networking Controller (that’s the network card - the LAN-card-2). Then click the uninstall, don’t click the box (don’t delete the drivers), just click ok to reset it.

Next, that small windows screen, the Device Manager, you will see File, Action, View, and Help. Select and click the Action and click the Scan for Hardware Changes and wait until it’s done.

When it’s done, go to the properties of that LAN-card-2 (TCP/IPv4) and enter the ip address (192.168.0.1) and subnet (255.255.255.0) click ok and exit all. Make sure both computers and all RJ45 cables are plug-in to wired router. Reboot/Restart your computer for changes to take effect.

Next ping each other again to see if both are pinging/responding to each other. If it does work now that is good. If not then go to 2nd option.

      2nd option trouble shooting:

The only thing that we could double check is do you have another computer that is also windows xp or another operating system? Please find one computer from your brothers or sisters or friends or mom or dad, so we can examine it out. To test it out two computers are the Computer B and Computer C, ok.. Both are plug in the wired router or wired hub network. For convenient, both should use any operating system of any Windows 98 or Windows 2000 or Windows XP or 2003 or any latest except Windows Vista. The Computer C’s LAN card properties should use this IP address: 192.168.0.3 and copy the other properties in Computer B’s LAN card’s properties with the Protocol IPX/SPX NETBios too. Then try to ping each other if both responds. If both are ok I presume that is ok. As I can see that the problem is the Windows Vista’s LAN-card-2 drivers and properties. The same thing that happened to me.

In Computer A, did you turn off the firewall in Windows Vista. Just disabled it in the system bar or task bar or if it is not there. I’m afraid you are going to have it uninstall or remove it first and install it later when both computers are responding. It’s not going to infect your computer and make sure you don’t click any browser to go to the internet and turn off your wireless router for a while. Do you use Internet explorer to go surfing the Websites? If so, you have to go to the control panel and go to the Internet option and delete/clear it all the cookies, browser history, and etc. where you surfed around to any websites.

Anyway when you use your Windows Vista in Comp A you can always go to the internet right? If so, that is good. That means your Computer A Lan-Card-1 is ok. The problem now is the LAN-card-2 in Comp A. Reset it again by going to the device manager and uninstall the networking controler card and click Action then click scan for hardware for changes and you know what to do. Next, ping each other to see if both computers are responding. if it is still not pinging/responding to each other go to the 3rd option.

3rd option: Let me know first:
If Computer A (Lan-card-2) is still not responding, you need to change that LAN-card-2 (network PCI adapter) and get a new one and install that new LAN-card-PCI-adapter then enter the ip address and subnet again. Gee, I’m getting exhausted here sweetie. Enjoy the fun learning.

      HI.. NICK.

      THANK YOU NICK.

      SUCCESS…

      FINALLY RESPOND TO COMP B.
WHENEVER THERE ARE THREE FIREWALLS (COMP-A,COMP-B, COMP-A THIRD PARTY FIREWALL) TURNED OFF/DISABLED . THEN RESPOND TO COMP B.

      THEN CONECT INTERNET SUCCESSSFULLY.
      PING IS WORKING.. REPLYED O.K.

BUT.. COMP-B INTERNET IS VERY SLOW..ANY WEBPAGES ARE SLOWLY OPENED.
IF ANY POSSIBLE TO SPEED UP INTERNET SURFING TO IN COMP-B.
THAT MEANS I WANT HIGH SPEED OR EQUAL SPEED UP COMP-A AND COMP-B.

ANY CHANCES OR OPTIONS IS THERE IN COMP-B. ???????

      REPLY THIS ONE….

      ————-

      AND WHAT ABOUT SECURITY ????
      THREE FIREWALLS ARE DISABLED …
I AM AFRAID TOO.. IF ANY WAY BOTH COMPUTERS ARE INFECTED ABOUT HACKERS AND VIRUSES AND ANY LOSS OF INTERNET SPEED.

ONE WAY IS HAPPY FOR CONECTING TO A COMP-B INTERNET.
ONE WAY IS AFRAID FOR ABOUT SECURITY..

      WHAT WILL BE DO..

THERE IS NO POSSIBLE .. WITH FIREWALL TURNED ON THEN CONECTING A INTERNET ??

      WHAT TO DO????

    97. 97 SESHU

      HI.. NICK..

      WHERE IS YOUR REPLY ???????

    98. 98 Nick

      Seshu,

Ok, success!!! Hey, I told you so, that’s excellent… I’m proud of you listened to me. Very good!!! I’ll give you applause for that. I feel like giving you an A grade student of mine. He, he, he, cool huh…

On Computer B, change that network card because I presume you are only using a 10Mbps speed of your network card. That’s why your speed is very slow. You need to buy a new network card that is 10/100/1000Gigabit per seconds built in one network PCI card that is for your future use for your Computer B, C, D, E, too and so on. You can change your wired network router into 10/100/1000Gigabit per second too so you will get the full benefit speed satisfaction. Also if you are planning to buy a best wireless router, get an either the Netgear Xtreme N with Gigabit or the D-Link Xtreme N with Gigabit to get a full satisfaction speed. Also, that depends on what speed do you want to use from your ISP provider. For example, DSL - 54Mbps (5 times speed) or 100Mbps (10 times speed), and/or T1-LAN (coaxial cable internet), but you are using DSL 54Mbps, right? I presume, if that so, that is your speed.

Anyway, do not use three firewalls on each computer. Because they will get conflict that will try to stop each other and no coming through to the internet for your client computer. Use only one Firewall product for one computer. Use the “Best One”. Use the one that can adjust the zone firewall level (for example: you can adjust it to High or Medium or low) for your computer A with built-in Spyware protector, Anti-Virus protector, Trojan protector, Worm protector, security protector, and cookies adware protector. On your computer B firewall you can adjust to a high level. Remember, enter their IP Address to each others computer when using Third party Firewall product (any firewall product) to recognize and can communicate each other.

For me, I’m using the Zone Alarm Suite (Firewall), Spyware Doctor, Ad-aware 2008 Plus is so excellent and one of the best of all Security I saw is AOL Spyware Protection, it really detects the Security threat WinBack.Backdoor on Windows Vista. But there is some vendor in internet who are selling their product Spyware, Security, etc. that can detect and remove that WinBack.Backdoor from Windows Vista which I don’t know who is that seller and I forgot the website. Because one time suddenly I went into his/her website and click that scan and scan my computer for free. This one is really weird, that WinBack.Backdoor it only exist in Windows Vista and I was/am using Windows XP only and I kn
