If you have more than one computer at home and have only one internet connection, you might be wondering how to use internet in both the computer.
Let’s assume there are two computers A and B. Computer A runs on Windows Vista and Computer B runs on Windows XP.

Computer A is connected to Internet via cable, so this will be connected through a LAN card. Now to connect computer B, you will need another LAN card in computer A or if you want to connect to more than one computer, you will need a wired hub.

First let me explain how to connect two computers in LAN.

Step 1: In Vista, before doing this you should enable Sharing and Discovery. You can do that by going to Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center. Under the section ‘Sharing and Discovery, enable Network discovery, File Sharing, Public folder sharing and others if you want to. (See picture below)

Network Sharing

Here, first network represents connection to internet and second one the local connection with another computer.

Step 2: If your LAN card that is connecting to another computer is installed, it will be shown under Control Panel -> Network Connections.

Step 3: Right click that local area connection and click properties.

Step 4: Under the tab ‘Networking’, click the properties Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).

Step 5: Click the radio button to ‘Use the following IP’ and give an IP address (For example, IP address: 192.168.0.1 and Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0)

Step 6: Don’t give any other information, Click Ok and close everything.

Step 7: In computer B, make sure you enable the LAN card which is used to connect to computer ‘A’. Here you need not give any IP information as Computer ‘A’ will assign an IP address dynamically. If it’s not working make sure there are no IP assigned and change the properties to ‘Obtain an IP address automatically’.

Step 8: Test the connection by pinging. (You can do this by typing ping 192.168.0.1 or whichever is Compter ‘A’s IP in the comand prompt)

Sharing the Internet connection of computer ‘A’ with computer ‘B’:

Right click LAN card which is connected to Internet under Control Panel -> Network Connections and click ‘Sharing’ tab and enable both the options to share Internet. (Note: Unless there is another enabled LAN setting you will not be able to see the shared tab under properties)

Click Ok and close. This option is given by the Windows OS known as ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).

Now you can use Internet from both Computer A and Computer B from a single connection.

Note: You can also setup password protected internet sharing, if you insist in privacy. Read more about in the comment by Termino and following comments.

  1. HI… NICK…

    THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY..

I AM USING NETGEAR 100 Mbps 8 PORT SWICTH BETWEEN TO THESE COMPUTERS. AND MY COMP -B IS LAN CARD NEWLY BUY INTEX 100 Mbps CARD. BUY THE LAN CARD WHEN COMP-B IS NOT RESPONDING SO MUCH TIMES. ALREADY CHANGES TWO LAN CARDS IN THAT TIME.
    O.K.
    ———–

NEXT MY INTERNET IS SIFY BROADBAND THROUGH CABLE. SPEED IS 128Kbps Unlimited.

    ——–

I AM USING IN THOSE COMPUTERS KAPERSKY INTERNET SECURITY 2009. AND WHEN IAM ADJUSTING FIREWALLS LOW SECURITY/HIGH SECURITY OR WHEN ENABLED FIREWALLS THERE IS NO CONECTIVITY STOPPED TO COMP-B . NOT RESPONDING AGAIN. NO PINGING.

    ——–

I TRIED ANY POSSIBLE WAYS TO GET INCREASE TO INTERNET SPEED TO COMP-B.

    BUT I AM FAILED.

    ——–

MY SMALLER BROTHER USING INTERNET SO MUCH TIME IN COMP-B.
BUT COMP-B IS VERY SLOWLY RESPOND THAT’S WHY VERY ANGRY ON ME.

SO HE USED MY SYSTEM VISTA(COMP-A) BY USING INTERNET. IT IS VERY SPPEED. I AM AFRAID ABOUT ANY WAY TO INFECTED. BECAUSE FIREWALLS TURNED OFF.

    WHAT WILL BE DO..
HOW TO INCREASE SPPED IN COMP-B. ANY WAYS ???????

  2. Hi Seshu,

Ok, Netgear wired (8-port) router and your LAN card (comp B) are 100Mbps, that is excellent.

Your Internet is only 128Kbps (that is only one hundred thousand letters/character per seconds data transfer rate speed compare to 100Mbps – that’s one hundred million letters/character per second ), that is why slow speed. But that is fine not too slow. But it will slow down your 100Mbps LAN card of your Comp-B. I wonder your Comp A is using wireless that is speedy. Here is what you do. But if you buy one of the two options. Either you buy Netgear 100Mbps USB wireless network adapter or Netgear 100Mbps wireless network PCI card. I recommend you to get the USB wireless network adapter for convenient and easier for you to do plugging connection. So you can share the wireless of your Comp A from your Wireless router to speed up your Comp B . Tell me about the features contents quality of your Comp-B like the CPU processor speed & front side bus; memory (size capacity) DDR PC2700 sample; and your hard drive capacity size & rpm, and Front side bus speed frequency of your motherboard. And the how many USB ports?

If your Comp A has duo core with high Front Side Bus Frequency, also your memory chip with big size capacity, that is why the speed process is speedy with the Windows Vista different quality program design of Internet and networking processing compare from Windows XP. Tell me something, if you use the wireless of your Comp A, what wireless router do your use and what speed is that, causing the Comp A to speed up?

On your Kapersky Internet Security 2009 for your Comp A, before you return that Kapershy Internet Security 2009 to where you bough it, here is we must do first. Facing the Comp A, look for the Menu (on your Kapersky) that you can input/enter the IP Address of your Comp B and enter that, so your Comp A will recognize/communicate your Comp B. Then, your Kapersky IS-2009 firewall, adjust it on the High level Security Zone first. Go to Comp B, facing Comp B, ping the Comp A to see if it is responding. If it is not responding adjust again the Kapersky firewall (on Comp A) on Medium level security or on low. If it respond that is excellent and success. But if it’s not then you need to return that Kapersky to where you bought it. I recommend you should used Zone Alarm Suite firewall, you can go to their website and select your own taste of different Zone Alarm value and security. It’s your choice at http://www.zonealarm.com. Because theirs can adjust to Medium level security zone and your Comp B can go through the line of your Comp A to go to the internet with the firewall still protect your Comp A with built in spyware protection, hackers, and etc. Their ZoneAlarm is very unique from other Firewall product. IT’s simple and easy to use once the Windows Screen Menu shows up, it’s all there. There is also new Tutorial Talk how to use and tips to help you how to use Zone Alarm.

Conclusion, you have to decide whether you buy USB Wireless network Adapter or Buy Zone Alarm, it’s your choice sweetie.

Heres another try Don’t use Kapersky yet. Just uninstall that Firewall Product and remove it. You have to go to the Zone Alarm website and download that Free Zone Alarm Firewall product. It’s totally free, use it for the mean time. Remember, Zone Alarm for Windows Vista has different from Windows XP unless they mentioned on the requirements can download it once and can install both for Windows XP and Vista. If not, it’s a separate download. Install it on your Comp A and Comp B. It will protect your Comp A and install one for Comp B, too. Comp B set it to High level Security Zone and Comp A (Windows Vista), set it up to a Medium level security zone. Go to Firewall Menu enter on Comp A and enter the IP address of Comp B. Facing Comp B go to Firewall Menu and enter the ip address of Comp A. That way both can share files and folders and games too. Try to ping each other. Also download from CNET.com download area. This spyware protection is best and recommended me from America Online. Download the Spybot160, Ad-aware 2008, Spyware Doctor 5.5 (choose the one that removes adware/cookies and blocks spyware too; AVG7.5 Anti-virus and anti-spyware. I’m using those it’s excellent. If the other one don’t finds it the others finds it. These protection are all free. But you decide if you want to buy their product to fully upgrade. But these you are still protected on your both computer or more computers.

  3. Seshu,

Oh I forgot, if you are into the speed internet process of your Comp B, here is what you do. It’s a little additional speed a bit. On your Comp B (Windows XP). Go to the Windows Task Manager. Do this, press CTRL, ALT and DEL at the same time. Windows Task Manager will appear, click the TAB “View”, point it to “update speed” and just click that “High”. exit now and done. If the speed still slow in going to a different website. Then, I think you have to get that Wireless USB Network Adapter to share the speed in your wireless router. You can return that LAN card you just bought it. Just save the other LAN card 100Mbps or it’s up to you. Enjoy your day and learning stuff here. Just ring me up, if you still have problems. Enjoy!!!

  4. HI.. NICK..

    THANK YOU FOR YOUR REPLY….

    SORRY FOR MY LATE REPLY…

I AM ALREADY TWO MORE MORE 100 Mbps CHANGING LAN CARDS IN COMP-B, AND COMP-A ALSO..

NOW WHAT WILL BE DO ?????

CHOOSE AND RECOMEND WHAT I AM TAKE.
DEPENDING ON YOUR BEST REPLY, ABOUT 8 PORT SWITCH & ANTIVIRUS/INTERNET SECURITY.

  6. Seshu,

Hi, ok, everything is fine except your Comp B’s memory. Its got only 128Mb memory capacity to hold. In the Internet, it slows down because of many graphics, Java scripts, advertisement, graphical movements or animations, sounds, other requirements and traffic when surfing the web. You need to know your motherboard’s brand name and model number. let’s say your motherboard is Compaq or ASUS or Gigabyte or ABIT or TYAN or ACER or etc. and let’s say HP – Hewlette Packard go to their website and type http://www.hp.com, go to their “support” and ask for your model number and look for the memory support list and manual or users guide and look for your memory slot module of your motherboard that what is the maximum capacity size for each slot module can handle. Let’s say your motherboard’s memory slot module has 4 or 3 modules and accepts each module a maximum of 512Mb or 1Gb. Let’s say if one memory slot module accepts a maximum of 1Gb, you have to buy that maximum 1Gb capacity size and do not waste to vacant it. If it is a maximum of 512Mb for one module, then buy that. If I were of you I will get maximum capacity size of memory module that requires to get a better speed on graphics, sounds, Java scripts and data transfer rates while surfing the website. Make sure get the same brand name of the memory chips, let’s say Micron 512Mb SDRAM DDR 533Mhz Front Side Bus and buy it on E-bay.

Just tell me what is the brand name of your motherboard and the model number.

For you, I will recommend to keep the router 8-port switch. Just download those free version of freeware software at http://www.CNET.com on download page, those are the AVG 8.0 it’s Anti-Virus Grisoft Version 8.0, the Spyware Doctor Starter Edition Version 5.5 (choose the one that removes spyware & etc.), Spybot160 (Spybot – Search & Destroy Version 1.6). Zone Alarm firewall Freeware at http://www.zonealarm.com,you don’t need to buy it. Choose the one that it’s free and download that free zone alarm firewall. I have a software free (it’s not in their website anymore) that it will speed up your 128kbps for your Comp B, it’s called Robust Internet Speed Booster (for windows 98/ME/2000/XP only). Use it for your Comp B (Windows XP Pro SP2). I’m using it on my Windows XP pro. It works, I’m glad that there is no spyware, malware or anything. It was mentioned that the government use it too on their Forums before (back in year 2005). These are the best recommendation freeware software for you for Windows 2000/XP/Vista and was recommended to me by America Online ISP Provider back in year 2005. Let me know if you have any question.

  7. OHH…SORRY NICK…

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SWEET REPLY..

    MY REPLY IS TOOOOO LATE…..SORRY..

  8. In my home I have two computers,in one system using server2003 os, another one using xp servicepack3 os in this I am using internet connection. Here I want to share the internet connection trough the LAN.

  9. Thank you so much bro! That was REALLY helpful!

  10. hello
i have two laptops.laptop A connects to the internet.Laptop B is connected to laptop A through wireless ad-hoc network. But in the network map it shows that it has access to LOCAL only.I have shared my internet connection in LAPTOP A but still B wont conect to the inter net. Please HELP ME OUT sir.

  11. my both machine connect with lan wire bi=ut no hub my 1st computer os is windows xp and connected to modem and 2nd pc os is vista and i connect both of them but in proxy server i have to put the address and i want the address for that total proxy and and lan setting

  12. I found SOLUTION it is NOT mine but it worked with me
“Just as what you guys feel, I’ve keep searching for a solution of this problem. Some people think that it is a bug, but I proved, it’s not ture.

Motivated by my curiosity and hacker sprits, I figured out that the problem is caused by a failed IPv6 stack problem, which repeatly shown in my event log.

To address this problem, I tried to disable IPv6, disable new dynamic stack, disable firewalls, enable static IP and so on. But they all failed.

To my surprise, the solution is extremely simple.

First, disable the satic IP and ICS (if you have set previously).

Second, go to Control panel > Network and Internet > Network and Sharing center > Managing network connections (on the right corner)> Select all connections > right click on one of the connection > click “Network bridging”

Third, when finished, right click on the icon of Network Bridge > select “properties” > unlock the UAC >remove the tick of your internet connection in the upper box > click “OK”

Forth, right click the icon of your internet connection > select “properties” > unlock the UAC > go to the “sharing” page, tick both check box. > click “OK”

Now, wait for the Windows Vista to recongnize the new network setting. Wait a minute and check if both computer can get access to interent. If the tricks failed to work, just restart both of PC.

In fact, I have posted this few moths before, but no one get noticed! This is a proven solution. “

  13. I TRIED YOUR WAY SEVONIKA…

BUT WHAT ABOUT SECURITY BETWEEN THESE TWO COMPUTERS……
HOW TO SET TO HIGH LEVEL SECURITY?????

  14. Hi Seshu,

How are you doing sweety? I apologize, I was not able to answer early due to I’m out of town for vacation.

Anyway, Sevonka is right too but you are vulnerable to attacking from spywares, adwares, malware, trojan, security threat, worm, worm cookies, backdoor security with spywares, and etc.

But the ZoneAlarm disables the IPV6 and the firewall of the Vista and takes over with Zonealarm protection firewall gate or Backdoor together with another any Anti-virus protection software if known by ZoneAlarm if it is listed on it’s database like McAfee, Norton anti-virus, and etc. So, it’s better that you have that ZoneAlarm. The Zonealarm guard as a gate and all the program coming in and out of the gate is guarded with whatever software protection like any anti-virus, anti-spyware, adware, malware, trojan, security threat, worm, worm cookies, and etc.

If you decided to like the ZoneAlarm, just go back to the http://www.Zonealarm.com and download that 100% free Basic ZoneAlarm firewall. I know you will get that satisfaction protection.

Now, if you use that Kapersky Internet Security with the IpV6 disabled and the Kapersky has programmed to act as a firewall
and anti-virus with anti-spywares/adware and etc. that is ok, good, then you don’t need the ZoneAlarm. I can tell the desktop computer B (windows Xp) can go through the internet.

If your Kapersky Internet Security is programmed to High Security then you and your Windows Vista is protected.

If your Kapersky is installed in your desktop computer B (Windows XP) and set into a High Security, then your both computer is in High Security. You are ok now.

Too many anti-virus software protection. Don’t they fight each other or gettting slow speed performance? If you know that which one is giving you slow speed performance, then remove the one that slowing you down. If they are not making any complex, blocking, or fighting each other, then leave it alone.

If your Kapersky does not have High Security, then get the 100% free Basic Zonealarm Firewall. Is got High security even in the medium level security. If you installed this on Computer B (Windows XP) you need to adjust it in to High Security level. But on the windows Vista you have to adjust it in medium level security so that the computer B can go pass through your computer A to go to the internet. and put each other’s ip address to the firewall zone menu of zonealarm so that they can communicate, see each other, can do data transfer, and can play game too. You can tell easily when you use Zonealarm. But it’s up to you now which one is better and best.

    Anyway. enjoy your day sweety.

  15. Seshu,

You should install those anti-virus that you know it’s better and best. But you need to install that Spybot – Search & Destroy version 1.6.0. That software is the only software that can detect real hidden spywares, malwares, and adwares, trojan, and other hidden. You also need to download that free Spyware Doctor Starter Edition version 5.5 but don’t take the Spyware doctor with Anti-virus (it’s 30 days trial version then you’ll pay after). Download also Ad-aware 2008 and Avast Anti-virus (this is different than any anti-virus, because it protects the DOS area not only Windows area and it detects hidden too that is not activated. All of these can be downloaded from http://www.cnet.com on download webpage.

Those anti-virus can’t detect those hidden or sitting or sleeping softwares as not an active that later it run once when it’s awaken and other worms. That’s why it’s better to install them as if the other don’t detects it, the others detects it. That way your computers are very, very safe.

    Have a nice day…..

    regards,

  16. HI NICK….

    WHAT TO DO..

YOU ARE SOLVE MY PROBLEM…..I KNOW…

I AM WAITING FOR YOUR REPLY…

WHAT TO DO???? HOW TO CONNECT???????? HOW TO SHARE???????

    DON’T USING USB HUB..

  17. Hi Sweet Seshu,

My question here first. Did your printer directly connect to the USB port of your Computer (Windows Vista)?

Is it a print server USB 4 ports or just a regular hub USB 4 ports? I’m just curious only? If that is regular USB hub 4 ports that is only use for one computer and it’s not for network. That is for additional connecting any device gadget like USB flash drive (jump drive) USB printer, USB camera, and any device gadget.

Ok, the first other connection: if that is a print server USB 4 ports, your two computers connect to this USB 4 ports print server, it acts like network hub. But it’s different, you can either choose the option 3rd or just install your driver and software CD installation into both computers (Win Vista and Win XP). This is my first time in this print server USB 4 ports.

The second better connection for local network sharing printer is you did right. That is correct connection on your Windows Vista. But your USB printer must be connected directly to your computer with Windows Vista.

Now, your computer Windows XP. You must choose the first option which is local area network printer to browse a printer and detect the printer in the other computer of your Windows Vista, which will appear \\SESHU\CANON LASERSHOT LBP-1210, you click that and you are set to share your printer and your windows xp can now share to print. The only thing disadvantage is because you still have to turn on your computer windows vista in able for the computer windows XP to access the printer to print.

If you want to use a USB 4 ports print server then you only need to turn on nicely the printer server USB 4 ports and one computer or both computer.

If you are planning to buy USB print server or print server network hub (RJ45 ports), it’s better to buy the wireless print server with built-in USB ports for future use. So you don’t have to run a USB cable wire. But the computer windows XP need to buy a USB wireless adapter to access the wireless print server to print out. It’s goo that your windows vista has already wireless connection.

Ok sweety. for any some reason you run into problem just send message. Enjoy our day and the happiness of our life.

    greets sweety

  18. HI NICK…….

    THANK YOU FOR REPLY…..

    YOUR FIRST QUESTION ANSWER.
    YES CONECTED.
FIRST IAM DIRECTLY INSTALLED PRINTER IN WINDOWS VISTA.
IN USB PORT. WORKING ABOVE FOUR DAYS. TAKING MORE PRINTOUTS IN WIN VISTA.
    O.K.
WORKS VERY WELL PRINTER IN WINDOWS VISTA.

WHEN IAM TAKING PRINTOUT PRINER STATUS IS DISPLAYES IS READY TO PRINT.O.K.
    THEN PRINTS ARE COMMING.

    NEXT YOUR SECOND QUESTION..

IAM TAKING PRINTER SEPARATE AND 4 PORTS USB HUB DEVICE SEPARATE.
USB HUB IS ADDTIONAL DEVICE. THAT IS SEPARATE.
NOT INCLUDING PRINTER WITH USB PORTS.
I BUY EXTRA THIS DEVICE.IF ANY WAY TO CONECT THROUGH THIS.
    O.K
MY PRINTER HAVE ONLY TWO PORTS .ONE IS USB PORT AND SECOND IS PARELLEL PORT. ONLY THESE TWO PORTS IN PRINTER.

    O.K
I CAN’T USE USB DEVICE ANY MOMENT.
    STILL NOW ALSO.
I DON’T TRY TO WITH USB DEVICE SHARING AT ANY TIME.HOW IT IS POSSIBLE.??
I DON’T OPEN USB DEVICE PACKING SEAL ALSO.

I THINK WASTELY BUY USB HUB DEVICE.
LEAVE USB DEVICE AND FORGOT ALSO.

    O.K.

  19. Hi Seshu,

Ok, what you do removed or undo what you did in Computer Windows Xp. It’s a mistake.

Put this way, in a nice convenient way, since you always bring your laptop Windows Vista in moving it anywhere is the only one to share local printer network or just plug in to USB cable printer. So when you wanna use a printer all you do is plug in to the “Ready USB cable of that printer” whenever you need to print out or if you have a print server it would be better, because when you turn on your laptop it detects your print server box that your printer is connected with, this another way.

There are many ways to connect the computer to your printer since there is USB port, parallel port, and RJ45 for local area printer network. In particular issue, in your printer, so that you don’t need to turn on both computer in some occasion or coincidence both are on. One computer is connected to the parallel port, I think it should be the computer Windows XP, since you always bring your laptop Win Vista.

When you turn on your laptop Win Vista, just always have the USB cable connected/plug in your printer. So when you turn on your laptop and you need to print out, just plug the USB cable to your laptop Windows Vista and turn on your printer. Very simple sweety. But it has to be installed the “Software with Driver CD installtion” to your computer Win Vista, which you did and for Windows XP too. Or if it happens to be your computer Windows XP is on which someone is using it and you want to use your laptop Windows Vista connected to RJ45 network hub to share printer from your computer Windows XP. Next installation sharing printer network procedure follow this.

Another way sweety in sharing local area printer network, in your computer Windows XP has 2 ports for your printer that has 2 ports also, which is, as you said USB & parallel. You have to decide which one convenient do you prefer, the above explanation procedure connection strategy or this next one.

You want a reverse situation in sharing a printer from computer Windows XP. In computer Win XP, either you plug it to your printer into the parallel port or USB port is the same, because you will try to detect in your computer Windows Vista in part of adding or browsing local printer network from the computer Win XP. I hope you already have installed the Software with driver CD installation to your computer Win XP and it is on default setting and sharing printers. To share the printers go to “Start”, click that “printers and faxes” on the Menu. Next, right click button on that default printer you want to use to share with, then click the “sharing”, click box “share this printer” and automatically shows the name of your printer on share name. Just click the ok. You’re done on computer Windows Xp. So the Computer Windows Vista can detect it.

Forget thinking about print server and print client. Think about where is the printer connected from. But print server is the box that have many different full of ports to share many multiple computers. Client is many multiple computers to share with that box print server. So it’s out of the way. Sorry about this part sweety.

In laptop windows vista in adding and detecting a printer to share with from the computer Windows XP, all you do is go and click start (circled colorful symbol of Windows Vista on left bottom task bar), click the “Network” in right column Menu. Next, click the “Add a Printer” on the top Tab middle Menu. Click the “Add a Local printer”. Next, just click the box to “create a new port”, because you are going to detect the printer on the computer Windows XP. Select the local port and click “Next”. That will detect the printer from the computer Windows XP which will show sample like this:
    \\SESHU\CANON LASERSHOT LBP-1210

After that you are done. When you ran to another problem just message me. Enjoy your happy days sweety.

  20. HI NICK….

I TRIED TILL TWO DAYS TOOOOOOO……
    NO WAY TO CONECT.

YOU SAY WINDOWS XP TO WINDOWS VISTA..
I AM ASKING WINDOWS VISTA TO XP..

I TRIED YOUR WAY YESTERDAY WINDOWS XP TO WINDOWS VISTA…
IT’S WORKING. AND COMES OUT PRINTS VERY WELL..
IN THIS POSITION I CONECTED PRINTER WIN XP(COMP B) USB PORT.IF I WANT TRY TO PRINTS FROM WIN VISTA(COMP A)THEN MUST BE TURN ON WINDOWS XP(COMP B)SYSTEM AND THEN COME OUT THE PRINTS.

IF I WANT TRY TO PRINTS FROM WINDOWS XP I DONT TURN ON THE SYSTEM WIN VISTA(COMP A). WHY BECAUSE PRINTER IS CONECTED WINDOWS XP USB PORT.

    O.K. THAT’S RIGHT.

NOW IAM ASKING I WANT TRY TO WINDOWS VISTA TO XP SHARE A PRINTER.
IN WINDOWS VISTA USB PORT CONECTED A PRINTER WINDOWS XP CANNOT DETECT ANY PRINTER(AUTOMATICALLY/MANUALLY ALSO). IF RIVERS POSITION WINDOWS VISTA DETECTED PRINTER.

    HOW IT IS????
I WANT RIVERS WINDOWS VISTA TO XP.
    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH……

I AM FULLY ANGRY AND CONFUSED STILL TO LAST FOUR DAYS ABOUT THIS………

NOW I HAVE FULLY EXPLAINED MY PROCEDURE NICK..

JUST YOU THINK HOW IT IS
    LIKE THIS WAY.

IN MY ROOM WINDOWS VISTA DESKTOP SYSTEM IS HERE.
AND MY BESIDE MY NEXT ROOM WINDOWS XP SYSTEM.

IAM CONECTED INTERNET THESE TWO SYSTEMS WITH 8 PORT SWITCH.MY SYSTEM TO MY NEXT ROOM SHARING INTERNET CONECTION.

(THAT’S YOU KNOW. ALREADY YOU SOLVE THIS PROBLEM YOU KNOW.)

(NOW I AM RECENTLY BUY A PRINTER .) THAT IS MUST BE PLACED TO WINDOWS XP(COMP B).
    O.K.

NOW I WANT MAIN SERVER PRINTER AND INTERNET CONECTION ALSO THROUGH OUT MY SYSTEM WINDOWS VISTA(COMP A). ONE IS WORKING.
THAT IS INTERNET. THROUGH OUT MY SYSTEM SHARING.O.K.

WHY DONT WORKING PRINTER SHARING THROUGH OUT BY MY FIRST SYSTEM(WIN VISTA) COMP A.
    O.K

IF IN CASE WORKING THROUGH OUT MY SYSTEM COMP A TO COMP B PRINTER SHARING. CONECTED MUST BE A USB PORT??????
IF AGAIN I BUY A EXTRA USB EXTENTION WIRE?????? FOR COMP A TO COMP B PRINTER SHARING (WHY BECAUSE PRINTER PLACED TO COMP B.)

    THERE IS ANY ANOTHER WAY.??????

    HOW TO DO?????

    SOLVE THIS NICK…….

    IAM WAITING FOR YOUR REPLY……..

  21. HI NICK……..

    WHERE IS YOUR SWEET REPLY……

  22. I’m having a problem trying to share internet between two pcs running Windows XP SP2.
PC 1 (host) has two NIC cards. NIC1 is a wireless card that obtains the internet connection.
NIC2 in PC 1 is a wired card which is connected to PC 2 via crosslink cable.
I turned on Internet Connection Sharing on NIC1 card.
NIC1 card obtains IP automatically from wireless router.
NIC2 card has IP of 192.168.0.1 and subnet of 255.255.255.0.
PC 2 has successfully obtained an IP from the host pc, it has an IP of 192.168.0.153, subnet of 255.255.255.0 and gateway of 192.168.0.1
I can see files on each other via Windows Explorer.
PC 2 can ping PC 1
PC 1 can’t ping pc 2, it can resolve the name.
Ex. Ping PC 2, shows it’s trying to ping 192.168.0.153 but can’t (Request Time out)
PC 1 can access the internet, but PC 2 cannot.
I have turned off the firewall on both pcs.

    Please help!!!

  23. Listen sweet Seshu,

Oh poor lovely Seshu. I have already mentioned Windows Vista to Windows XP. Windows Vista has to share printer in Windows XP (Comp B), because printer is connected to Comp B Windows XP. Anyway, I’ll make it clear here.

This is how it starts. This is the way sweety in sharing local area printer network. First, in your computer Windows XP has 2 ports for your printer, which your printer has 2 ports also, which is you said USB & parallel. You have to decide which one convenient would you prefer. It doesn’t matter if you connect to parallel port or USB port. Now, if you want your printer connected to your Comp B Windows Xp in USB port, so be that way. Your printer driver will detect where your printer is connected. You said, you want USB. Ok, cool sweetie. But make sure the software and driver CD installation is installed, which I’m sure perhaps you did.

So that the Windows Vista can share to your Windows XP. Do this, facing Windows XP (comp B), to share the printers go to “Start”, click that “printers and faxes” on the Menu. Next, right click button on that default printer you want to use to share with, then click the “sharing”, click box “share this printer” and automatically shows the name of your printer on share name. Just click the ok. You’re done on computer Windows Xp.

Forget thinking about print server and print client, since both computer is connected and wired through RJ45 through router hub network. Think about where is the printer connected from. Explain to you, print server is the box that have many full of different ports or the same ports to share many multiple computers. Client is many multiple computers to share with that box print server with full of many different ports. So it’s out of the way. Sorry about this part sweety.

Next step sweetie. Facing in laptop windows vista in adding and/or detecting a printer to share with from the computer Windows XP, all you do is go and click “start” (circled colorful symbol of Windows Vista on left bottom task bar), click the “Network” in right column Menu. Next, click the “Add a Printer” on the top Tab middle Menu. Click the “Add a Local printer”. Next, just click the box to “create a new port”, because you are going to detect the printer on the computer Windows XP. Select the “local port” on the down arrow and click “Next”. That will detect the printer from the computer Windows XP which will show sample like this:
    \\SESHU\CANON LASERSHOT LBP-1210

After that you are done. When you ran to another problem just message me. Enjoy your happy days sweety.

  24. Gary,

If the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on your NIC1 is not showing up located on “Advanced” tab Properties, you have to go to NIC2′ properties and click “install” to add a protocol called “NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Compatible Transport Protocol”, so that the ICS will show up in the Advanced tab properties of NIC1. If the ICS is showing up you still have to add the that protocol IPX/SPX/NetBIOS, so all your computer there will communicate faster, continuous and both can ping each other. If the IPX/SPX/NetBIOS is added up already.

Go back to your NIC1 (PC 1) properties to activate the ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) it’s on your NIC1 properties. Go to the properties of NIC1 (the one that goes to internet). Just go to the “Advanced” tab, below shows the “Internet Connection Sharing”, underneath, click the box in front of “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet Connection”. Below, it shows Home networking connection, in the box you have to chose your NIC2 LAN. Then click ok. You are done. You have to observe if you activate the firewall in NIC1 or the Third party product firewall to see if your PC2 is passing through the line of PC1 to get to the internet. If it does then your are ok. Also ping each other if both PC1 & PC2 are pinging each other. Next activate firewall in your PC2, observe again if both PC1 & PC2 are pinging each other. If not, only one is pinging, then don’t activate the firewall on PC2. It’s ok if you have a third party firewall for your PC2, you can activate it and put it on a high security level. If both are ok now. Then you are done. Enjoy your networking

  25. I am sorry for being very descriptive with my trouble, but I think it is really necessary to understand my problem. Please read the entire post and help me out.

I have Windows VISTA Ultimate on the host machine and it is connected to the broadband internet service via an Eathernet LAN card for 24/7 without any username/password requirement to connect to the ISP having a REAL STATIC IP.

I have 1 WLAN card card and 2 other Eathernet LAN cards installed on the host system.

I have configured the broadband internet connection to be shared via the WLAN and any other system connected to my WLAN access point can use the internet connection of my host system.

Now, I also want any other systems connected through my other two LANs to be able to share the internet connection of my host machine, just the way it works for the WLAN.

    To the best of my knowledge, as I have successfully been able to share one internet connection for more than one LANs, for Windows XP Professional, other systems must use the IP address of the host system for the network interface that has originally been shared as the DNS and the gateway should be the IP address of the host system for the network interface of respective network interface the client system is connected to. To be more clear, I am drawing the sytem below;

    Host > LAN A > 111.111.111.111 [BROADBAND INTERNET]
    Host > WLAN > 222.222.222.222 [SHARED FOR LAN A]
    Host > LAN B > 333.333.333.333
    Host > LAN C > 444.444.444.444

Now, any other system, connected to WLAN, uses 222.222.222.222 as the DNS and the entire systems works just fine.

To the best of my knowledge, any other system connected to LAN B, should use 222.222.222.222 as the DNS and 333.333.333.333 as the GATEWAY IP addresses in order to make the internet connection of LAN A to be available to them. And my knowledge works just fine when the host system is Windows XP Professional.

The trouble is, my knowledge doesn’t work for systems connected through LAN B when the host system is Windows VISTA Ultimate! The clients are able to access the network, but are not able to access the internet.

On the VISTA host system, for Windows Firewall, I have disabled the firewalling for WLAN, LAN B and LAN C. I have even tried by turning off the Windows Firewall completely. I don’t have any 3rd party firewall utility or hardware firewall installed for any of the host and the clients systems.

Can anyone light me up please? Thank you in advance.

  26. Hi Nick,

I will try what you mentioned this evening.
What I don’t quite understand is why does ICS require NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Compatible Transport Protocol?
I haven’t seem anything on the NET tying these two together before.

    Gary

  27. Gary,

Some computers, the ICS will not come out until you add/install protocol NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol in the Properties of either LANcard1 or LANcard2.

The purpose of ICS is to share connection to the internet so that your computer 2 (the one wants to go through the computer 1 to get to the internet) can go through. Tell your host computer 1 to activate ICS so allowing the computer 2 pass through the line of LANcard 1.

That IPX/SPX is really good in sharing files and folders and can play smooth (no lag) games and can communicate better to each others computer and you can see each others sharing files and folders. But you have to activate which files or folders you want to share it by right clicking button on the files or the folders you want then click “sharing” then follow directions. That way you can transfer files or folders smoothly to both computers or more computers. Enjoy networking my brother….

  28. Gary,

If the ICS is already there, then you don’t need that IPX/SPX activated unless if you want to share files and folders between your two computers 1 and 2.

For me it’s better to install that IPX/SPX protocol, so that when you ping each other during troubleshooting. It’s responding well than without the IPX/SPX. Without it when you ping each other sometimes is not responding. There is some motherboard that is weird as I experienced it. So it’s up to you my brother. But enjoy learning in networking.

  29. Broken Arrow,

    Please go back to my thread March 20th, 2008 at 10:53 p.m. (Bhavani Prasad). June 9th, 2008 at 9:42 a.m. (Gagsy). June 21st, 2008 at 6:04 a.m. (Seshu).

Please read those threads. Your connection for host will work but except those clients will not. Those I explained how to connect compA to compB through the internet is the proper way of “how to connect to the internet through another computer?”

  30. Nick,

Ok, as I mentioned in my original posting, ICS is available on my NIC1 (PC 1) and is turned on. I tried adding IPX/SPX on both pcs, but I still cannot access the internet on PC2.

    Gary

  31. Gary,

    Please read my thread-message on dated March 28, 2008 at 10:53 p.m. (to Bhavani Prasad) and 11:05 p.m. and 11:15 p.m.

  37. [...] I recently installed Ubuntu Linux on my old PowerMac G4 “QuickSilver” tower. During the installation, I needed to use my internet connection over WiFi to download the installation packages. I tried using Linux’s WiFi support with my Mac’s AirPort card, but to no avail. 39. Hi
I am a novice at all this sorta thing so could someone assist me in how i get my internet to be shared from one pc to another?
I have a D-Link router with a Mac and a PC direct connected. I have a wireless laptop and my custom pc (in another room to router) connected via a D-Link USB Adapter. All these computers get a good internet connection. I have a Crossover Ethernet Cable connecting my Custom1PC (with internet) to my Old Custom PC (Custom2PC – without internet) I wish to share the internet connection from my D-Link wireless through the LAN to my Custom2PC so that I can then play LAN multiplayer games with my friends. Both CustomPC’s are running Windows Vista Ultimate and they can both see that they are connected to a Local Only Connection (LAN Cable) I have no trouble with the internet working on Custom1PC but nothing working on Custom2PC??? I believe I have Internet Connection Sharing Allowed but if someone can assist me from start to finish for setup of setting up the LAN connection from scratch to sharing the internet connection would be muchly appreciated. I just have the ethernet cable connected to the pc’s not through a router or anything.
This is really bugging me and I have been unable to find a solution to this anywhere so I really need some help ASAP before i decide to punch my stupid PC or something worse.

    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. Hello,
It seems i have a problem similar to many others. Computers A & B are connected, recognise each other and can share folders, ping each other etc, however compB (XP Home Ed02 SP2) still has no internet connection.
Is it my version of XP or something else?
I have been trying for weeks and still cant get the Xp comp on the internet.
The similar posts didnt appear to be replied to, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  46. to enable ics with vista as host and xp as client:

    in vista:
    1. disable ics and static ip address on your internet connection
    2. setup a bridge between your internet connection and wireless connection
    3. right-click the bridge icon…select properties then remove the tick of your internet connection on the upper box
    4. right-click your internet connection and on the sharing tab, check both boxes.
    5. setup an adhoc connection

    in xp:
    1. just connect to the wireless adhoc connection

  47. Probably should have described my setup.
XP computer has no wireless ability.
Vista computer is connected to the internet via a wireless network router.
Xp computer is connected to Vista computer via cable LAN.

  48. There are two ways.
    1. use Switch. This is simple way to share file/internet.
    or
    2. Install proxy on Comp-A (at this level Switch is not required).Comp-A have two lan cards. Comp-B have one lan card. Comp-A lan-A connect internet and lan-B connect with simple CAT-5 cable with Comp-B computer. Go to Comp-A in network connection->advanced->allow other network.
    You have done.
    Enjoy sharing!
