LyteByte Icon Featured in Smashing Magazine

It came as quite a suprise when LyteByte’s Icon (Favicon) was featured in the Smashing Magazine today.

These are formed by the characters L and B. Small b is inside the L and they were turned upside down to form the number 97 but later I turned the angle to give an arrow look.

I was always inspired by blogs which have very unique Icons and hence it motivated me to design this favicon earlier this year. You can also see my earlier designs I thought of and have used.

How to Remove Duplicates in Excel 2003?

Long back I wrote an article on how to remove or highlight duplicates in Excel 2007? Though this option is much visible in Excel 2007, it is also possible in Excel 2003 with simple steps which are hidden inside. Also many have been looking for this option in Office 2003.

So, how to remove duplicates in Excel 2003?

Select the row or column that has duplicates that you would like to remove.

Go to Data -> Filter -> Advanced Filter.

Make sure the range is correct and check the option “unique records only“.

You can either choose to replace the content or copy unique records to a new location.

How to Login as Administrator in Vista from Welcome Screen?

As I mentioned in my previous post, I had to run a command as Administrator in Vista. First I was looking if I can access Administrator account from the login welcome screen but unfortunately it is hidden. But you can enable with a simple tweak to show the Administrator account in the welcome screen.

So, how to login as Administrator in Vista from Welcome screen?

To enable this, you must enter the following command in the administrator mode. Type cmd in the Vista Start Run box and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter [See earlier post for more info: How to Run as Administrator in Vista Command Line]

To active Administrator account, type

net user Administrator /active:yes

To deactivate Administrator account, type

net user Administrator /active:no

How to Run as Administrator in Vista Command Line?

Recently I wanted to do some actions in Windows Vista command line prompt but with elevated access as an Administrator. You may need this access to do actions like creating symbolic links etc.

So, how to run as administrator in Vista command line?

The easiest way is to use the type cmd in the Vista Start Run box and use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + Enter instead of just pressing Enter. This will open the Command Prompt in Administrator mode.

You can also right click cmd.exe and click Run as Administrator.

On the other hand, you can also activate Administrator account in Vista, so that you can login from welcome screen.

How to Change the Priority of Wireless Network in Vista?

In Windows Vista, when you connect to a wireless network for the first time, you can save those credentials so that it can connect to the same network automatically if available. But sometimes, if you have access to multiple wireless networks, you may want to change the priority in which it connects to different wireless networks.

So, lets see how to change the wireless network priority?

First to see the current list of Wireless Network that Vista has already stored,

Click the Network Status icon in the taskbar tray and click Network and Sharing Center.

Note: If you are not able to see the Network Status Icon in the taskbar tray, go to Start –> Control Panel –> Network and Internet –> Network and Sharing Center.

On the left side Tasks lists of the Network and Sharing Center, click Manage Wireless Networks.

Now under Manage Wireless Networks, all the Wireless Networks that has been accessed so far will be listed. The new network that is connected last will be listed on the top.

To change the priority of the Wireless Network, click the network name and use Move Up or Move Down button to change the order of the Wireless Networks.

How to Calculate Non-Zero Average in Excel?

Sometimes it may be needed to calculate the average of a column of cells excluding all the zeros in any of the cells. It may be little tricky for novice Excel users if they don’t know how to use multiple formulas in conjunction. Though we can use same method in both Excel 2003 and Excel 2007, the later gives much easier new features that we can use.

So, lets see how to Average Non-zero values in Excel 2003 and Excel 2007?

First lets see how to calculate non-zero average in Excel 2003.

Assume we have to take non-zero average of cells from A1 to A9. We normally use =AVERAGE(A1:A9) to calculate regular average. This will take zeros for calculation and will return wrong result.

You can use two formulas (SUM and COUNTIF) together to get the desired result. =SUM(A1:A9)/COUNTIF(A1:A9,"<>0") takes the sum of all cells from A1 to A9 but counts only cells if they are not equal to zero. You can also change the formula to use SUMIF and COUNTIF with “>0” etc.

Another method is by using the Array Formula or CSE formula. This helps to implement AVERAGEIF feature which is not available in Excel 2003. {=AVERAGE(IF(A1:A9>0,A1:A9))}

Note: All the array formula must be started and ended with curly braces {}, you can get the braces by pressing CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER, rather than pressing just Enter alone after entering the formula. We’ll learn more about Array Formulas in another post soon.

In Excel from Office 2007, you can also use all the same formula as in Excel 2003. But you can also take advantage of new formulas available like built-in AVERAGEIF. To achieve non-zero average, we can use the formula, =AVERAGEIF(A1:A9,"<>0",A1:A9)

Note: In the images above, the condition is written as “>0” which will remove any negative numbers as well. In that case you may be required to use the condition “<>0”.

Keyboard Shortcut to Open Firefox in Vista

By default, Firefox does not have any keyboard shortcut assigned to it in Windows Vista like Internet Explorer. We saw how to assign a keyboard shortcut to open Internet Explorer in the last post. In this post, we will create a keyboard shortcut for Firefox. We have seen so many posts on the usefulness of keyboard shortcut for various applications and this idea is based on creating custom keyboard shortcut to open any application in Windows Vista.

So, how to create a keyboard shortcut to open Firefox?

Step 1: Create a desktop shortcut of Firefox in the desktop or under Documents if its already not there.

Step 2: Right click the shortcut and click Properties.

Step 3: Click the shortcut key section and press the key that you would like to assign as the keyboard shortcut for opening Firefox. In this case, I have assigned Ctrl + Alt + F to open Firefox.

Step 4: Click Ok and now you can use this keyboard shortcut to open any instance of Firefox.

By default, Internet Explorer does not have any keyboard shortcut assigned to it in Windows Vista. Be it IE7 or IE8, we can assign a keyboard shortcut to open Internet Explorer. We have seen so many posts on the usefulness of keyboard shortcut for various applications and this idea is based on creating custom keyboard shortcut to open any application in Windows Vista.

So, how to create a keyboard shortcut to open Internet Explorer?

Step 1: Create a desktop shortcut of Internet Explorer in the desktop or under Documents if its already not there.

How to Create Custom Keyboard Shortcuts in Excel 2007?

Excel has lot of functions and most of the functions doesn’t have any keyboard shortcuts as they are used in only very specific conditions and cases. But for some cases, you may be required to do those tasks quite often and you may like if you have a keyboard shortcut.

Let me give an example, we have covered earlier how to convert rows to columns or columns to rows in Excel and while using formulas. Its just the transpose feature in the special copy feature. But if you are required to use this task quite often, you may create your own keyboard shortcut to do the transpose paste like Ctrl + T.

So how to create custom keyboard shortcuts in Excel 2007?

Before we proceed on the section of how to do create custom keyboard shortcuts, this method is done using the macros in Excel. For some Macros may not be enabled (you may not be able to see Developer tab), please refer to our previous post on How to Enable Macro Features and Settings in Excel from Office 2007?

To create a custom keyboard shortcut, go to the Developer tab and press Record Macro.

Give the details of the macro, the keyboard shortcut, store macro in and description.

Side Note: If you have not saved any macros before in Personal Macro Workbook (Personal.xlsb), you may get the message like this. “Do you want to save the changes made to Personal Macro Workbook? If you click Yes, It will be available next time you start Microsoft Office Excel”. Click here to know more about Working with Personal Macro Workbook in Excel

Next, perform the function that you want to be repeated by a keyboard shortcut (Make sure you have done whatever function that usually precedes the function that is being recorded, like copying some cells in this case) . In our example, right click in the place where you wanted to paste special with transpose. Select Paste Special -> Transpose –>Ok. Stop recording the macro.

Now you can use the keyboard shortcut you have mentioned to perform this custom function.

How to Make Your Page Layout Settings as Default in Word 2007?

If you prefer to have custom page layout settings that you use always with Word from Office 2007 then you can use this simple tip to make those settings as default. You can change settings like Margins, Orientation, Size, Header edge, Footer edge, Layout, Borders etc and make them as default.

So how to make page layout settings as default in Word 2007?

Go to Page Layout tab and click the little arrow on the lower right corner of Page Setup.

Change all the Page layout settings and setup. Under the tab Margins, click Default which is on the lower left corner. Click Yes.

From next time, when you open a blank Word page, it will use these page settings.
