Internet Explorer 7 that comes as a part of Windows Vista stops working after some days of Vista Installation. Nobody has any clue why it’s happening this way. When I started IE, It said “Internet Explorer has stopped working and Windows will notify if a solution is available”.
Peter Bromberg suggested resetting all the Internet options but it works only for few. It did not work for me and I even re-installed Vista again. It was working till I did windows update. I think I shouldn’t have done windows update. I hope Vista team comes with a solution soon.
Update: Finally my IE7 is working, Check out How Did I Overcome IE7 Issue in Vista? for more…

Another reason to avoid vista for the time being. Does anyone really use internet explorer these days for anything but compatibility testing. I’ve rarely had a problem with Firefox since I started using it.
After how many days does it stop working ?
@Madhur
It stopped working 10 days after I installed Vista.
WTH lol Windows eat windows kind of stuff.Their own application doest work.Guess FF will be happy.
Must be a super bug in their application
Here, IE7 works fine in Windows Vista.
My Internet Exporer 7 came pre-loaded with Windows Vista, Home Premium Edition. Sometime after getting on the Net and browsing (including the downloading of files), I got the same error message that many others are experiencing: “Internet Explorer has stopped working” and “Windows will notify if a solution is availableâ€. No solution is given, yet Windows just restarts IE 7 automatically. Perhaps related, I had an earlier problem with “Windows Explorer” where I received the error message that it was “corrupted”; A Window kept popping up which I couldn’t get rid of; I had to reimage my computer from the OEM System Disks to remedy the problem. On one ocassion the IE 7 browser stopped working just after performing a manual virus scan of my entire computer; I needed to reboot in order to get the browser working again.
Upon contacting Microsoft, I was redirected to the OEM - Toshiba. Having contacted Toshiba they recommended a number of actions to see if the problem could be remedied as follows:
1.) Resetting the IE 7 parameters;
2.) Rolling back IE7 to an earlier state… to a possible date prior to the appearance of the problem; difficulty was, I didn’t record the exact date and,
3.) Using their Operating System Recovery CD’s to reimage my computer.
None of these trials worked for IE7. The reimaging, however, did work for the Windows Explorer problem.
Observations and Comments:
What is upsetting is the fact that after all this futile effort, Toshiba claims it is Microsoft that needs to come up with a patch to remedy the problem. Conversely, Microsoft points the finger at the OEM (Toshiba). Unprofessional indeed!
Why was Microsoft so “gung-ho” on rolling out this Vista O/S and related products so soon? So much money, time and effort involved with this defective product! It is unethical that a knowingly defective product is being sold on the market; let’s call a spade a spade. It is even more unethical that Microsoft won’t accept the responsibility for errors in their coding logic; nothing is new under the sun, eh? Empires come and go for this very reason: Attitude and Integrity. Maybe it’s time to return my Toshiba computer and give the MAC empire a chance.
I have a Toshiba and for the last 4 days I have practically done nothing but seek a solution to this very problem. It is noting short of amazing that I am on this site seeing this. Iam only here because I aidently clicked on a new icon on mny Google toolbar I loaded a week ago. Please keep us informed to a solution other than the ones we have so far seen. Thanks Guys I will do the same
SteakDaddy
Same problem with many hours of frustration.
My solution Set protected mode to OFF
Go to
Control Panel
Internet Options
Security
Uncheck ENABLE PROTECTED MODE
OK
Restart
That has worked for months and will have to work until Bill Gates gets around to figuring it out.
I purchased a new laptop with Vista Home Premium installed and have also been experiencing this problem. It has happened countless times. The only redeeming factor is before my old laptop died IE did not work at all. It’s sad to say but the fact that IE at least works with this fault is the only semi-redeeming statement I can make. Obviously though, this problem should not be here. I will try turning protected mode off and see if that helps me.
Hum. I have the same problem and I have a new HP Pavillion laptop. Looks as if it’s not just a Toshiba problem! I’ll try the solution from Bob. I’ve just been using Firefox!
I’ve had the same problem many times myeself. It is annoying and it’s a shame that Bill Gates and his greed has made it virtually impossible to work a computer without his nose being involved in it. I have yet to find a fix and I am sure that microsoft will let this problem linger for months.
Personally, when I bought this toshiba computer I was upset that I was not given the option of XP or Vista because as far as I can tell, Vista is crap and the consumer is paying for it without a choice.
I haven’t used firefox but I think I will check it out. New and improved has not worked with Vista.
If anyone finds a solution that works, please let me know. I did start operating in protected mode but the problem still persists.
turning off the protected mode worked for me too but then my antivirus keeps giving me errors
i also have this problem , and i unchecked my (ENABLE PROTECT MODE). and it said that my computer will be at risk now…..
my question is .. will my computer be ok with NORTON ?
thanks ginny
I also have this problem I’m running vista home premium and even tried to turn off protected mode but that didn’t work either… I think it has to do with the latest updates that automaticly download and install.. I never had this problem until recently.. for example This one site I goto I click on a link a verify box is supposed to come up asking for a user name and password but in IE7 the ” Internet Explorer stopped working box” comes up instead
I also have this problem, and its really annoying, the only thing that seems to work is to use firefox, that has help me so far, by the way I’m using a Compaq with Vista Home Premium installed and its barely 2 months old, so I doubt its the manufacturer, can’t blame Toshiba or HP, Bill you have another problem to fix!!!!
One other thing, I get “Windows Explorer has stopped working” and not internet explorer, Is it the same problem? or, something totally different???
The following should avoid the message “IE has stopped working”:
- Open CONTRIOL PANZEL
- Open INTERNET OPTIONS
- Click the ADVANCED tab
- Click underneath the RESTORE INTERNET EXPLORER SETTINGS
Good Luck and greetings from Belgium
Good day, at first.
I receive my first PC with Windows Vista at one week ago.
Today I meet “Internet Explorer has stopped working” problem. Ithink, it may be problem with Windows Update, because I return to earler System Restore point, and then all works fine. But - I lose Microsoft Autoroute and Cannon Lide 70 drivers through process. Maybe those softvare can work after reinstallation, let it see.
Through repair process i don`t disable Protected Mode.
I got the same “Internet Explorer stops working” message, but I found if you right click the IE icon and then click run as a administrator it works fine.
This problem can be solved by few ways.
1.Reset the setting on the internet option
–>Go to internet option in control panel then reset the advance setting
If still the problem persist then refer step 2.
2.Disable the startup items
–>Open Run and type MSCONFIG
–>System configuration utility will appear on the screen
–>Uncheck Load Startup Items and restart your computer
If still the problem persist then refer step 3.
3.Click on Start–>All programs–>Accessories–>System Tools–>System Restore
Choose an earlier restore point that your computer working fine without any problem. This could fix the problem.
If still all the method above doenst work then do a Full Format Recovery on your computer. Reinstall windows vista on your computer again.
Thanks
Good Luck Guys.
I tried what was suggested on this page without success, however I took the advice of Ronny one step further. Open the control panel, Internet Options, Advanced button, RESET.
This seems to have fixed the problem for now anyway. Change is not fun, unless you are at a slot machine!
My mom just bought a brand new Toshiba laptop last Friday from Best Buy, with Vista & IE7 installed,Only ONE day after
I hooked up a Linksys wireless broadband router to my Dell
PC,and got her up and running online, next thing I know, “IE
has stopped working and blah, blah, blah, after hour’s and hour’s of going through every possible internet option’s
configuration on her Toshiba and my dell,IE still does not work on her laptop. On the other hand,my Dell is about 2 year’s old with XP home edition, and I installed IE7 last year, with no problem’s except the once in a while “IE has
encountered a problem, and has to close”,but after closing,
it open’s right up again, immediately. She has Macfee trial
protection,while I have Norton/Symantec 2007 upgrade,it seem’s that my Norton see’s her laptop network connection
as an “Attack” and a “high Security risk” on my Dell.Explain
that one to me.I chose not to have a wireless connection
on my PC,because it has alway’s worked fine. We’ve got a “Geek Squad” guy coming on Friday morning to try and
figure out what the problem is, but now that I know about
this worldwide problem with Vista & IE7,I think I’ll just
format her hard drive and install “XP” with IE6, so she
can actually use her laptop for something other than a clock
and a DVD player.
i just baught a new hp lap top with vista premium. last night i say the message ” internet explore not working” and then it restarted. it has keept giving me that same error and keps restarting. i really cant do any thing right now because of the fact it keeps auto restarting. how can i fix this?
Download an alternate browser like mozilla that fixed the issue for me.
After I did updates on 12/12/2007 my IE stopped working so I know it’s Windows Updates that’s causing the problem. IE was working fine before then. If I didn’t have Firefox already installed I’d really be in trouble having no access to the internet to even find this web page. Reset didn’t work for me. Other websites say it’s better to resolve the issue and not uninstall the updates but offer no solutions.
This thread started in March and here it is December and the problem still happens with the updates messing up IE. What is Microsoft doing about this problem? Nothing?
Oh Phoo!
Just popped home from the office, as my IE7 ‘just stopped working’! Came home to use my pc to find out how to fix it!
I’m a soletrading web designer/hosting guy… with no explorer ..I’m stuffed!
Thanks Bill!
i install noton360 on vista os but after sometimes the IE stopped working.try to repair no solution until i download mozilla firefox. what can i do i still want to use the IE.
i install norton 360 on window vista and the system is regreting it.asking me to uninstall and re-install after i have done that over and over the problem is still there.solution
I have a Toshiba lap top that came installed w/IE7 and vista home and have been experiencing many of the same problems, mainly IE7 freezes constantly so I switched to foxfire. the only problem is foxfire has a formatting issue with my banking site and I can not copy and paste in a usable form,so as suggested i went to
control panel
internet options
security tab
and unchecked enable protected mode
and restarted
when I was done i reversed the process and restarted and it seems to still be working(for now any way)
Note: I closed my outlook while i did this so as to not envite any problems in unprotected mode.
i am using AVG anti virus not the bundled Norton
I will continue to use foxfire for all other internet use
I have a newly brought HP Pavilion notebook PC that came with windows vista, and am having the same problem! I wasted my times in the past few days trying to fix the problem after having a 50minute conversation with the technical service and am so close to throwing my brand new laptop out the darn window!
But for some weird reason, Mozilla (or aka Firefox) can connect easily to the internet(how funny).
All I can say is;
I am thankful for technologies but you can depend so little on it.
just got my compaq laptop with pre-intalled vista and ie7. Same problem.
I went to internet options and reset my settings. went to mozilla to download and voila… problem fixed - as i no longer use ie7.
Hey!
I’m facing the same problem on my new Fujitsu SIEMENS Amilo laptop…I guess it’s got nothing to do with the OEMs, but only with MS…please do let me know if and when a solution comes up. Thanks!
@Rohit, you may check out my other post on this issue for solutions that I had used before but I have been using a new HP laptop for nearly an year and I have not faced this issue. I believe Microsoft would have made some necessary adjsutments. Try updating to Vista SP1.
If you look at all the posts almost ervery case is a laptop. And Vista home premium. Synaptics has clearly stated on their website that installing their drivers can cause unexpected results.
Apart from this having been by this problem I actually reinstalled Vista (having no problems) and went step by step. I’d like a feedback because in this case and on another friends case the problem started immedeately after installing Yahoo toolbar and Yahoo messenger.
McAfee kept warning me again and again about system changes which I clicked “Allow”.
@Dr.Suhas Rao, Your point sounds logical and good. But I had problem with my HP pavilion desktop and I never had the problem in my HP Pavilion laptop even once though it has synaptics driver installed. (But synaptics driver did not allow me to upgrade to Vista SP1 for a long time. I updated very recently after the synaptics driver was updated)
One thing I know for sure, IE7 stops working because of some other incompatible driver or software and it varies between different computer. So what I did in my desktop was reinstall the OS and I verified IE7 each and every time I installed a new application so that I would know which application is causing the trouble. But I understand nobody has that time to sit and do that
Well, in my case it seems to have been caused by some spyware. I ran Trend Micro that detected 20 spywares, fixed 18 of them and ‘keeping fingers crossed’ IE7 seems to be behaving itself.
I also experienced problems wirh IE7 under Vista. About 6 months ago I switched to Mozilla FireFox (instead of IE7). Since then I did not encounter anymore of those problems.
For those who love IE and need to use firefox there is an addon theme in firefox called myFirefox which emulates IE 7 almost perfectly
i went to internet options from the control panel, clicked the advanced tab, and pressed restart, then apply, and then okay….all seems fine now….internet explorer doesn’t automatically close on me and then restart anymore! also, when i close the browser, i don’t get that annoying message and the internet doesn’t restart. everything works normally now.
Just followed the instruction from shinesa and instead of pressed restart, press reset. No more trouble with IE7 in Vista.
Thank shinesa for your post.
Just to add one for option. I tried all the above to no avail. I just purchased two Toshiba laptops and had this same issue of IE 7 not being able to find any sites after removing some of the pre-installed stuff. I ended up going into the registry and removing any trace of the Google Desktop. I had un-installed this but apparently it does not come off cleanly. After this both system now work fine. Hopefully this is of help to some.
