In the last post, I discussed on the effectiveness of using keyboard shortcut keys. Today we take it to the next level. If you use an application quite often and you are tired of using the shortcut in the start menu then you can create your own keyboard shortcut to open that application. Moreover creating shortcuts for all applications and keeping it in the desktop looks a bit messy and I like to keep my desktop clean.
Step 1: Make sure you have created a shortcut for the application already. This shortcut need not be in the desktop or start-up; you can keep it inside a folder in ‘My Documents’. To create the shortcut, right-click the program file and then click Create Shortcut to create one. If the shortcut is being made in the desktop, move it to a folder under ‘My Documents’.
Step 2: Right-click the shortcut and click Properties.
Step 3: Click the Shortcut tab and under that you will find Shortcut Key box.
Step 4: If no keyboard shortcut is being assigned then it will display none. All shortcut keys are used in a combination with CTRL + ALT. So, select another key along with CTRL + ALT and click OK.
(Note: You may not use keys like ESC, ENTER, TAB, SPACEBAR, PRINT SCREEN, SHIFT, or BACKSPACE to create keyboard shortcuts along with CTRL +ALT)
Step 5: Now, you can use this keyboard shortcut to open that application when you are using the desktop or any other application which doesn’t have their own keyboard shortcuts.
This is applicable for both in Windows XP and Windows Vista.
