Today is the Shutdown day as everybody is trying not use computer for a day. This was started as an experiment to find out whether we can live without using computer for a day. The answer is ‘No’ for some and ‘Yes’ for the most. But the question is ‘why we should have an experiment like shutdown day to find out whether we are dependent on computers and technology’?
Centuries back all things were made by human hands and then by mechanical means but when Electricity was discovered to have a huge potential it replaced all of them. It took over slowly but steadily and at the present age there is nothing that can be done without electricity. Yeah even computers run on electricity. Back then, nobody got worried that electricity is taking over life and they did not have a shutdown day to experiment whether we are dependent on electricity. It was proven to be efficient and an important source of energy to run our daily life.
In the 21st century computers took the application of electricity to the next level and as human is dependent on electricity, he is dependent on computers also. Computers and Internet are used in all the fields known to mankind, right from information management, computing to space launch. There is no such need to experiment an obvious fact. Some may argue that we are experimenting to find out whether we are addicted to computer and its applications. Sadly, the answer is yes. But nobody complains or decides to have a shutdown day for using an electric fan or an air conditioner or a car. Is it not obvious that people are addicted to that also? Centuries ago, people lived without fans and AC and they walked all the way to wherever they went but now if you have lived your life using these applications, then you can’t live without. In a similar way, if anyone has lived their life using and knowing the benefits of a computer, he cannot definitely live without.
When there is a blackout in a part of country, the whole nation is affected, the markets tumble and the economies crash. In the future, if there is such a thing as shutdown day, the same ripple effects can be felt. But then, the answer for ‘whether we can live without using computer for a day’ would be ‘No’ for the most and ‘Yes’ for very few.

Computer Feeds me to be honest
I cannot live without it even for a single day
When I go to my village where there is no source of computing I always take my laptop with me even
we really don’t need to shutdown our computers for
24 hours ,if anyone who really is power savvy ..
should shut down when not in need ….like many people
use computers day and night even if they are not using it
for any purposes…just to create a false praise that
their computer runs for 24 hours a day..
hope u got what i want to say..
@shashank,
I got what you are saying. But this shutdown day is not about saving power but to experiment whether we are able to live a day without computer and everybody knows the answer.
TO be honest with you, My laptop is on almost 24×7 (Even when I’m sleeping). You can call this as an addiction or whatsoever. Shut Down Day is just like a test, whether you can face life without computers.
What I actually did was, I locked up laptop and handed over the keys to my dad. But lately at home, I felt lonely… I went for a swim. I tried to play around with my friends.. but non of them worked! Finally, I was forced to turn on my iMac.
I failed! I failed!
That proves it, we can’t live without Computers.
so the results is :
we can’t live without computers internet to be more accurate.
@shashank, yeah that sounds more correct cos when the net is down, it is more like the blood supply of the computer is down.
I just worked complete day on the shutdownday. I forgot that day actually, but even if I knew I wouldnt be able to keep away from computers…
