One of the options that I love and use in Windows Vista is the Preview Pane at the right side of Windows Explorer. It is very handy and useful as it is not needed to open a file to view the contents of it. Preview is available for file types like Word, Excel, Notepad, Wordpad, any audio or video file etc.

You can scroll through the contents in the Preview Pane so you will be able to read the whole contents of the file without the need of opening it. Even in Excel, you will be able to browse through different tabs of the spreadsheet. For audio and video files, it presents a mini embedded Windows Media Player which can be used to view the files. The contents of the files like Word, Excel, Notepad, Wordpad etc can be copied selectively from the Preview pane.
How to activate Preview Pane in Windows Explorer?
Go to Organize -> Layout -> Select Preview Pane

This will make them work better than Thumbnail View. Thanks to the graphics advancement
Wow i never gave it a try so far . thanks for sharing .
Thanks for sharing this. I didn’t even know the pane existed. Goes to show how much I have explored Vista yet!
I have that option up, yet I do not get results in the preview pane. I tried it with Word docs, but nothing. Could this be because of a Registry setting or something? Your help would be apprecaited.
Office files did not work for me until I installed Office 2007, after which it was very impressive and useful. It carries a problem however: if I preview an Excel file and then double click it to open it, Excel tells me that it is already open and my personal.xlsb is locked. Obviously it is being used for the preview. Is this the intended behaviour? It’s annoying to have to select a non-Excel file then open Excel then do a File, Open.
how to activate preview pane in vista Home Premium?, i have tried to go to Organize -> Lay out -> Select preview pane, but it only have the navigation pane, no detail pane and preview pane
thank you

before saving it select rich text in the drop menu under the box you write the name of the file
there should be a keybaord shortcut for activating and deactivsating the preview pane, i have no time for going to menus.
