Over the success of the king of online Video sharing, Youtube, many tried to imitate them and tried to follow their principles. Needless to say that still Youtube tops the list of online video. In less than 2 years Youtube became the 4th most visited site in the world and it was recently bought by Google of $1.65 Billion. That’s lot of money for a site thats been around for just two years with 67 employees. It also got Time magazine’s “Invention of the Year” award in 2006. They were caught up with copyright infringement as users were loading copyrighted videos and they have to delete all those files.

But another site called delutube copied all videos that were hosted in Youtube so as to host those files when they are deleted.

Looking at the success of Youtube other internet giants tried to step their feet into their own online videos. Here is the list of what they came up with.
MSN Soapbox
Soapbox was started by MSN last year and it was an invitation-only beta then. However they entered public beta in February 2007. The MSN soapbox is dependent of JavaScript and AJAX.
The features include Upload, Share, Search, Browse, Comment, Tag, RSS, Community, Embed videos in blog etc. The MSN Soapbox is also unlimited for any user.

Google Video
Google Video was started to compete with Youtube before they bought it. Google couldn’t overtake it so they bought it! This also has a nice online interface with a concern on the ease of use and simplicity. After Google bought Youtube, it also provides an option to search for videos in Youtube from Google Video.

AOL Video
American Online came up their Youtube imitation called AOL Video. This has most of videos that are aired in television channels. They also have another site called UnCut Videos where users can upload videos and share.

Yahoo Video
Yahoo Video started as Video Search engine but they later on added options to upload videos and share it in blogs like Youtube in late 2006. This also hosts all the basic features of an online Video Sharing Site.

MySpace Video
MySpace Video is especially for the users of MySpace and this also has all the features of Online Video Sharing. In April 2006, MySpace Video took over Youtube by a large margin. However, Youtube gained feet later on.

All the YouTube imitations were more or less the same and they allowed users to upload any videos and categorize them in different tags. These are the sites which didn’t have any particular theme.
Other Themed Youtube Imitations
However, recently some have come up with sites which are themed. Under this category we have two sites called GodTube and GospelTube which are for Videos related to Christianity and Gospel.

TeacherTube hosts videos which are tutorial in nature and which are educational
Lots of Imitation also came on the adult video segment and regional segments.

On conclusion Youtube still remains unbeatable and will be.

Ah but there are probably a dozen more, with the likes of Daily Motion, etc. And there’s the adult side of YouTube as well, with just the P word replacing the You from YouTube.
Then you have a whole set of sites that just wrap YouTube (or other) videos in their own site, essentially hijacking both bandwidth and content.
Yeah, I wonder if YouTube wasn’t owned by Google, how’d they have managed to live with the server bandwidth they needed!
Lot of sites have cloned you tube after their tremendous sucess.
wow.. i didn’t realize there were so many..
There will probably be a lot more YouTube clones in the future. The good thing about it is that some of these clones will probably have added features that YouTube doesn’t.
@Brown Baron, Yeah competition is the one which brings out innovation. More the competition, higher will be the growth (in terms of productivity and innovation) in any sector.
