Microsoft has released Silverlight which is not something new but it’s been in the code name “WPF/E” (Windows Presentation Foundation Everywhere). As Long Zheng points out that everybody including Business Week is talking about Silverlight as new Video Player software. But it is not!
Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of media experiences and rich interactive applications (RIAs) for the Web.
Silverlight is Plug-in which integrates with all other existing web applications providing high-quality audio and video in all major browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox or safari running on the Windows, Linux or Mac.
Silverlight also enhances standard or AJAX based applications with rich graphics and media. It provides vector based graphics, media, text, animation and overlays. In simple words, it provides rich interactive application (RIA).
Microsoft is currently giving pre-release version of Silverlight which you can use till June. After which you will be required to install the release version which comes for free.
