Here it is, the Web-Based Yahoo Messenger. So, from now on there is no need to download and install Yahoo Messenger in all computers and laptops you have. As usual, this is also tab based and all the chat windows are neatly arranged one after the other in tabs.

New Yahoo Messenger

This doesn’t look all sophisticated and it doesn’t have features like voice and video chat. As the main concern was to be a light weight so as to use messenger easily without waiting for it to load in your browser, they managed to put everything in a package which is only one-tenth of the original version. I just tried it out and it’s amazingly fast. But they didn’t miss out features like emoticons and message history.

As this is Web-Based, they have made it compatible with Windows or Mac and in all browsers. This is also great news for people who are being blocked to use messenger by firewall in office or school. You can access Web Yahoo messenger from http://webmessenger.yahoo.com or even from a shorter domain http://web.im/. But as in all cases, you cannot login to Web based Yahoo messenger and stand alone Yahoo Messenger at the same time.

This is a great new feature for Yahoo Messenger but I am still waiting for the invite to Integrate Yahoo Messenger inside my Mail box. The interface of this integration looked much better and neat than this new Yahoo Web Messenger.

I’m now saved from the Y! Messenger software which I hate for it’s ads and stuff! :D

    2. 2 Mr.Byte

But there is a big ad in the right side of this new Web-Based messenger also :(

    3. 3 Shankar Ganesh

Yep! Just saw that thing, but still better than the software itself, in my view, which is a little bit of a resource hog.

And the pop insider, if I remember it’s name correctly, which used to display unwanted stuff, is atleast not here :)

This should be popular. Like Shankar said, the YM software is a little greedy with the memory. I think I prefer this one as well.

This would be helpful for students and people where there are restriction on installing msger.
Btw did you get a linkback for the links I posted yesterday?

    6. 6 Mr.Byte

      @Nirmal, I didn’t get any…I am not sure why???

    7. 7 Nirmal

I saw your comment on JohnTP’s blog saying you didnt get a ping back, Just wanted to confirm whether you got mine. I too have no idea about it. But I’m getting regular pings.

Well, Nirmal, I too did not get any pingbacks for the links you gave me the other day. Dunno why :(

I just wondered if this yahoo beta will torn-up one day… You know today news about Microsoft and Yahoo! ? I wonder this application can maintain its way to be the final release one since it’s Beta version? :-(

    10. 10 Mr.Byte

@Ken Xu, But when it comes to mail, I would like to retain my 7 Year old Yahoo id :)

    11. 11 blueyes

Actually that’s been out for years and years. They just did a facelift of it.

ahmm can you help me on how to activate my yahoo messenger to my yahoo mail beta or do i have to wait for Yahoo to send me an activation?

    14. 14 nikhil

how do i activate my yahoo messenger i’m so frustrated that i have lost all my friend contact.pls if anyone has an idea or can help me out to retry my messenger account.

    15. 15 gavinw71

I may be in the minority but I really don’t like how Yahoo has implemented this. I have lost every contact in my Yahoo Messenger application and now find out that with the integrated messenger in Yahoo mail that every person in my address book with a Yahoo ID can see when I am online. I have a pretty big address book, and while I like all the people in it I do not necessarily want to use messenger with every one of them.
