How to Display Your Online Presence?

Displaying your online presence from Yahoo is very simple and all that you have to do is add two lines of html code. This will display images stating whether you are online or offline. When the user clicks this image, it will open a new chat window through which any visitor can Instant Message. Even if you are not online, still the visitor can send the message and you will be able to view it when you sign in next time.

Note: This will display your Yahoo ID, so to protect your privacy you may opt to use a separate Yahoo ID for this purpose.

You can also embed this code in message boards and forums to display your online presence apart from homepages and blogs.

Although it is handy piece of code, it suffers a serious drawback. The user must have enabled a setting show his online status in his yahoo profile for this code to work properly. Unfortunately, it seems that it is set, by default, to hide the status…

Nice find, definitely will help your readers connect to you more when they have anything to share or ask.

I would prefer not to show my yahoo status. I had this terrible experience when I joined a forum and gave my Yahoo ID. People from the forums started sending mails and all fwds. And your suggestion to create a new ID looks ok, but then difficult to manage all. :-)

@M G Harish, I didn’t know that part. When I tried it was working so I didn’t knew that we have to set the online status in the profile. Thanks for mentioning.

@Nirmal, Yeah showing the online status in forums will cause problems. I think the chances are less for misuse if you show only in your blog as majority of the traffic will be from search engines and regular readers and not from people who are looking to market their products through mails.
