White is Costly and Black is Cheap when it comes to color and electricity. In my earlier post, ‘Switch Off Your Monitor and Save Energy’, I mentioned that switching off the monitors when not in use could save lot of energy. Now it seems you can also save energy just by shifting from White Google to black Google. According to EcoIron, “An all white web page uses about 74 watts to display, while an all black page uses only 59 watts.” As Google currently has more than 200 million queries a day, and if Google has a black background, it would save 750 Megawatt-hours a year! That’s lot of energy which means Google with a white background is very costly.

Blackle took this point into consideration and they have created an all black homepage for searching in Google. Have a look at this and try it out. Black Google seems to be little odd as we are quite acquainted with the White Google.

So, Will you switch to black Google on the basis of energy conservation? Let me know your opinion!

  5. Interesting! Atleast Google could have switched over to black, than mounting Solar panels all over Googleplex in mountain view :D

I also wonder how EcoIron calculated the total power consumption.

  11. black is good in appearence…and faster also i like it…i thnk i will be using it frm right now.

  12. That’s intriging. Very funny. It really goes to show that small changes can make a big difference! Well worth a question on the site..

  13. EnergyStar debunked this as not really saving energy at all on LCD screens (the majority of screens used nowadays). Though it does save some energy on the old CRT monitors.

  14. I use LCD monitors at home and at work (which seems to be the increasing trend these days) and I suspect that the color doesn’t make any difference to the power consumption as the back lights are on at the same intensity no matter what color is being displayed on my screen. I would be interested to know if someone could validate my suspicions. I expect that the black versus white power consumption figures only apply to the older CRT type monitors.
