Since the advent of tabbed browsers, it has demonstrated the ease in using and managing the different information in a single window which were earlier available only in different windows. As Internet browsers come with tabbed features, it has reduced the clutter of windows. But the clutter still exists when you open lots of folders under windows which exist in different locations and which by default you have to open in different windows. This results in redundancy and this is where tabbed Windows Explorer helps.

Easy Solution With Firefox
If you use Firefox as primary internet browser, then with a couple of plugins you can use Firefox as Windows Explorer or File Manager with tabbed features ( Read How to use Firefox as Windows Explorer or File Manager? for more details).

ExplorerXP – Tabbed Windows Explorer

ExplorerXP

ExplorerXP is a third party Windows Explorer which comes with tabbed features. This may lack the look of the sophisticated Windows Browsers from Vista but it has been designed for the purpose of usability and light weight. You can open any number of folders in different tabs across the browser which also comes with a Folder and Groups section at the left side. The folder section is the same as the ‘Explore‘ from the Windows but the Groups section lets you to group a couple of folders or tabs under a single name so that you can open all these related folders with a single click.

Apart from these main features, it also has these notable features:

Easy access to My Computer, Recycle Bin, My Documents & Desktop
Drag & Drop with Explorer, the tab bar and special folders on the main toolbar.
allows to rename multiple files in one step
Displays folder size information and the real size of compressed files & folders
Folder Size Cache - greatly improves the speed of the folder size calculations between sessions
Merge / Split Tools
Advanced copy/move
Unicode support
USB devices support
Clean - recursively removes files that match given list of extensions or wildcards
Groups - A group is a collection of folders, which users are able to access quickly or drag & drop files to them
Configurable keyboard shortcuts

This is a freeware and it works with both Windows XP and Windows Vista (though it may not have the look of the Vista Windows Explorer) and its very light weight.

ExplorerXP doesn’t appear to be in active development anymore. A rather damning thread in their website forum tells of many crashes on XP and that thread goes waaay back. Oh, and the copyright of the web pages still say 2005. Perhaps the author retired, the program looks to be unsupported to me.
