If you are using Office 2003 and still want to view and edit new Office 2007 formats, then you can install Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack. But there are chances that many would not have installed the compatibility pack. Whatever maybe the situation, if someone is viewing the new Office formats like .docx, .xlsx or .pptx using Office 2003 some of the features and formatting maybe truncated. It will open and present it to you in the best way it can understand the file and leave out the rest. For example, if you have used some new colors in some of the cells in Excel 2007 and if you view that in Excel 2003, these colors will be replaced by their nearest color.
So how to check if all the features in your new file are compatible with earlier Office when you create it?
To identify the features and formats which are not compatible with earlier Office files, you can use ‘Compatibility Checker’
Step 1: Click the Office button at the top left corner
Step 2: Roll down to Prepare and Click Run Compatibility Checker

Step 3: It will list down all the issues in a pop-up box if any.

Step 4: You can also choose to run the compatibility checker every time you save the Workbook or every time you save the Word in earlier Office formats.
You can use this feature in Word, Excel and PowerPoint from the Office 2007.
