In the last post, I wrote about ‘How to Save and Archive Chat Scripts in Yahoo Messenger?’. GTalk has more options when it comes to saving chat scripts than Yahoo. These chat scripts are saved in the folder Chats under Gmail and it can be accessed from any computer through internet. By default these chat history is enabled and you can even search the archives of your chat history. One of the most advanced features of chat history is the “Going Off the Record” feature.

First, how to change chat history features?
You can do it either in GTalk settings or Gmail settings. From the settings menu choose Chat and you have options whether to save the chat history or not.
Off the Record!
Going off the record is exactly what it means. If you are not comfortable with the other person who you are chatting with saving these chat scripts, you can then choose to enable “Off the Record”. This makes sure that these conversations are not saved in the chat archives of the other person or in your chat archives. This feature is so selective that you can choose the persons who you don’t want to store the chat archive and have it turned on to whole other people. And you can also change the status within a click. In the chat window, just click the options and click “Go off the record” and when you want to enable chat archive again, click the options -> and “Stop chatting off the record”.

This feature may look like a great privacy tool but the basic matter of fact is that Google knows what you are talking about and it has an archive of all that you have said through GTalk or Gmail!
