Software and Driver downloads for HP Pavilion DV6500
Here are some of the most frequently asked issues:
HP Quickplay not working: First try to updated or reinstall the HP quickplay driver. Download from the link provided above. Or HP quickplay may have been disabled in the startup, read this post for more details on how to add or remove programs from the startup.
HP Webcam: Using HP webcam to record videos and take images and other uses from HP QuickPlay.
Monitor goes blank: Sometime the monitor goes blank, read this post for more details.
Battery not charging: Remove the battery completely from the laptop. Wait for sometime (like a min to discharge any static or residual current) and then assemble it. This is more like the same solution when the monitor goes blank which I have described previous to this one.

Update: Yet Another HP Pavilion Entertainment PC at Home – dv9700

[...] Mr.Byte wrote about his laptop HP Pavilion dvc6500, good read as I also considering for a laptop. You can read it here : My New HP Pavilion Entertainment PC – dv6500 [...]
It looks sleek, how much did it cost you?
Had you considered Sony Vaio. I want to get one too. Could you provide on what aspects to consider while looking out for one?
I love its look . Very sleek.
It costed about USD 1100 after 20% off from HP Shopping. I particularly choose higher configuration of memory and processor as I needed it for the applications related to my studies. These two were the basic. And the screen size is neither small nor the biggest as I needed it move around to school and home. The rest is up to you, if you need to reduce the price you can avoid all the features like fingerprint reader, graphics card, TV tuner card etc…

The notebook looks great. I specially like the black color. I own a silver grey HP dv4000 laptop but will be buying a new one in the year end sale.
I would be going for a viao, hp or a hip lenovo notebook, lets see which one fits in my budget.

Please help me
I got hp pavilion dv6500 entertainment pc and I can’t find on it the software to use the built-in camera and microphone.
even the microphone is not working with sound recorder comming with the windows vista
where can I find the software for the webcamera knowing that I used the one on the http://www.hp.com and it didn’t work out
thanks
@Hasson, Did it work when you get your computer and then stopped working or its not working from the time you bought? If you have got the driver CD when you bought, use that to install the drivers. In my experience, update only windows using windows update and dont update the HP products. Sometimes it stops working. In december, I used HP update and my speakers stopped working. So I reverted back to old HP driver and it started working again…
If that doesnt help, you may have to call HP…
Hi,
Oh thank God.
I have bought this same laptop yesterday. But I have some issues with the factory partitioning. The C drive [having Vista] is of 140GB. But I want it to be of 25 GB and create a separate partition from the rest. The inbuilt ‘disk management’ utility of vista won’t let me shrink the volume more than 70GB. And I heard Norton Partition Magic doesn’t work on Vista.
So, how do I go about it? i.e., how do I repartition my C: drive so that I can have 2 partitions of 25GB and 115GB.
Please help.
I have a Hp Pavillion 6500, but it is not connecting with Wireless Connection, and not shown Wireless Icon on the task bar, please tell me what i do?
To Hasson,
In order to access the microphone and webcam on the laptop (which i have), you must go to quickplay (the icon with the circular arrow on the laptop above the keys), then from there, you have to click on the icon with the camera, music note, and film reel. From there, you should see a list of sources, one being HP Webcam. Double click and you should be ready to record.

@Dobri, you can get those details from the advanced setting of display properties. You can check out more from “How to get the details of Shared Video and System Memory in Vista?”
Thank you Mr.Byte,
but I still can’t find the setting in my Bios.
I look all over my bios settings but it is very simple, and there is now video memory setting.
My laptop was with windows vista home, and the video memory was 768 MB. After I reinstall it, the memory becomes 128.
I have a HP Pavilion Laptop dv6500. I am having a problem adjusting the built in microphone. I open the webcam via quickplay but when I record I am unable to hear my voice on the playback. I did the right click on the speaker icon and then clicked on recording devices. it shows a conexant HD-Audio SmartAMC HD2 and the level is only at the first bottom bar. How do I make the microphone more sensitive so it picks up my voice when I’m sitting with the laptop right in my lap? I almost scream right into the microphone but on playback it is a faint whisper. thank you for your help.
Hey my wireless button seems to not want to work is there a way to reset it or something it just stays orange and doesnt go blue to let me connect to the internet I am pretty sure this button is not alowing me to go on line becuase its is disabled when its orange light. Anyone know how to reset the button so I can go onto the internet?
I have one of those, but mine doesn’t charge. Do you know what’s up with it? I’ve had it for about 7 months.
Hey whazz up? My Husband just bought me HP laptop but unluckily sometimes when we needed to chat and view my cam it doesn’t really work well he just bought this HP PC dv6640ee 10 days ago. it always hanged the cam. thanks waiting for your reply…
Okay, I came here to figure out how to use the intergrated webcam, now when I start quick play and go to the cam option it freezes
Several times.. and then I have to end explorer.exe and restart explorer.exe because it disappears. This computer has been nothing but problems, blue screens of doom, freezing, constant shut downs and it’s a brand new work computer. It only freezes or goes to the blue screen when the internet is hooked up, which is very inconvienent. It’s basically an empty computer used for work, I don’t know too much about computers but I know I hate windows vista
All I hear about it is “it looks cool” or “it gives me lots of problems”.
Anyways enough of me venting
Does anybody have any suggestions as to open quick play cam without it freezing?
Also, when I try to use the cam on MSN it claims it’s either unplugged (it’s built in) or in use by another program, which to my knowledge no other program is running the camera, as I haven’t ever used it before ^^.
Thanks….

I am having problems charging my battery. Clicking on the battery icon list the amount of battery charging and then says not charging. I can’t seem to get the battery charging – any ideas on how to fix this.
If you click on Start, Help and Support, Power and Battery, there is a Battery Test. Maybe it will tell you what the problem is.
@Dee, yeah even I have faced this problem once, just remove the battery from the laptop completely and then assemble it. It worked for me.

I know it cant play high def movies from disc i.e. blu ray or HD dvd, but can it play high def video clips from the web or from a camcorder?
hi, i have a hp pavillion dv6211tx. the battery died after 6 months of owing it? any tricks on ‘kick starting’ them back to life. i can seem to find a replacedment battery for this model laptop
My biggest gripe about this pc is the location of the quicktime button and how sensitive it is. Sometimes I am pointing at something on the screen and the quickplay program comes up because I graze the button for it, or sometimes I am feeling near the fan to see how hot it is so I can decide it its time to let it rest since Im on it 24/7, and once again the quickplay program comes up. Its so annoying. At least twice a day this program comes up and interrupts whatever I’m doing. Aside from that annoying thing, it’s been an overall good pc. The first week I got it, it froze up and the screen showed a grey pattern with diamonds in it. I had to shut it off and turn it back on again and it was fine after that. This has happened about three times in the 8 months I’ve had it, but like I said, overall its a good pc.
hi i have hp dv6500 laptop i have problem with the power as i take charger off laptop goes off and i did change battery but still the same problem can any one help me with this matter may thanks
heyy..i have a similar laptop..my problem is that i put the remote control in and cant seem to get it out..does anyone know what i can do?
I bought the new game Spore for my son this past week, only to find out that the game cannot play on the Pavilion dv6500 because it only has 1.66 GHz and the game needs a minimum of 2.0 Ghz. Does anyone know if I can upgrade this machine with a new processor that doesn’t cost more than the laptop itself??? And where would I get one? Thanks.
I have the DV6500 and have only had a battery problem for the last 6 months. It says it’s fully charged, yet when I unplug it – it turns off in less then 5 minutes. When I plug it in, it restores and says that my battery is at a critical level – even though it was fully charged a few minutes ago! Anyone have any advice?
like Sara, I also want to upgrade my CPU to 2.0 GHz or higher. Is there any way to do this? I heard that with HPs you’re stuck with the one you have. Thanks!
Nick,
I researched it thoroughly. No, there is no way to upgrade to 2.0 GHz. Called HP and various CPU manufacturers. Unfortunately, no way. My son now plays his game on my husband’s computer, which makes for some pleasant battles.
Writing to say ‘Hi’ to all as this site was just discovered. I bought my DV6575 August 2007 to serve as a mobile office and engineering work. Configured pretty much the way Mr. Byte has his. Since then, I have spent about 5000 hours on this box … the bezel has distinct wear marks where my wrists lay and keys on the keyboard has distinct “shiney” marks from constant typing.
What a beast! I just love this laptop, its performance/price range and the separate graphics card. It is a little quirky about some things, but a little early on tweaking of settings made them go away (except for HQ Quickplay sometimes starting when taking the PC out of hibernation mode).
About the processor, alas there is no easy way to swap out. Like most laptops the processor is soldered to the board.
Also, William had a question about transferring pictures from a cell phone to the PC. That requires Bluetooth wireless. My DV6575 only has wifi. That was fixed with by supplying a $20 US Bluetooth dongle & software. Shop these carefully as the quality of the dongle and driver software varies considerably w/Kingston seeming to have the most issues posted on the net.
For anyone out there shopping for a HP DVxxxx series laptop, advise is to look at the specs very closely. HP varies the processors between major division numbers in the series (e.g. DV62xxxx, DV63xxxx, etc). The same for memory type and max allowable. I recall the odd numbered series (for example DV6500, etc) as the ones having a better Intel processor.
I have a problem with my laptop: on the screen it says A DESK READ ERROR OCCURRED PRESS Ctrl Alt del to restart it but it can’t restart. What can I do ? and what is the problem.
my hp laptop is not detecting the primary battery, how do i solve the problem?
Can i upgrade my RAM and put some more module on? meaning, can the pc go over 2 giga RAM?
If not, will i have any problems if i install windows xp sp3???
Hi, I have a Hp Pavillion dv6500. I tried to downgrade it to windows XP but the installation does not recognize there is a Hard Drive plugged in. After some research I finally found out that I need some drivers for the BIOS. Does anybody know where I can get these drivers and how to install them?
Thanks
