There have been good freeware alternatives to WinZip for years now. It really surprises me how quick people are to buy something when 10 minutes of searching would result in a free program that is just as good. Same thing with Compupic and ACDSee, there have been great freeware alternatives for years (like Xnview, Picasa, Irfanview with thumbnails) and I still meet people who have recently bought Compupic or ACDSee. J-Zip or IZarc are basically 100% clones of WinZip and are free, really, even for commercial users.

Both users and Winzip get paid and partners are happy too! Very clever idea. I don't think winzip is the better compression software though.
