"this is ALL NICE BUT not pragmatic enough for me. DOES SOMEONE KNOW A WAY TO HAVE A SHORCUT TO SWITCH OFF THE MONITOR ON DEMAND?"
Yes - not too complicated
First of all ensure that you have access to the PC
Now here is the complicated bit - look at your monitor (LCD/VDU) and search for the "POWER" button - press it once. Power saving on demand completed.
To restore back to normal - press it again.

Do you know a monitor in standby - that is not powered down can use up to 15watts of power - if you have 300 PCs in an office and all monitors are on "standby" over night - the cost per year is around £3000!

A Relative utility named Turn Off Monitor which does the same job & can be used anytime to switch off monitor instead of waiting for power management settings to kick in & do the job.
