On my series of posts on backup, I have written about doing backup of important mails in Gmail and Yahoo. Microsoft Outlook has the backup add-in which helps to periodically create a backup copy of your personal folders which are stored in your computer.
The emails and the folders are stored in the form of pst files which includes all other information such as contacts and calendar. But if you have mapped other mail servers to store data in your outlook then these data would not be stored as pst in your personal computer. (Read more about Managing PST files and folders in Outlook 2007).
How to use Personal Folders Backup Add-in in Outlook 2007?
Download Personal Folders Backup Add-in
After installing the backup add-in, the backup option will be listed under File -> Backup.
If you run the backup tool for the first time, you would get the following message as No files set for backup

Click Options and you will be listed with all the pst files and folders that are currently available and linked with Outlook.

You can set the reminder options, choose the personal folders files that are listed under backup files and click ok.

The chosen files will be listed and click Save Backup. Outlook has to be closed while performing backup.
The backup files will be stored in the same location as the pst file and the name will be concatenated with name backup.
Restoring Backup Files:
Go to File -> Backup -> Open Backup. Browse the location and click Ok.

Backup the backup files:
You can backup these files in an external harddisk, dvd or you can store it online or in a LAN.
We are giving away couple of licenses of full version of professional backup and sync software which allows to backup all different files in different ways in a secure manner. So watch out for the give away this week!

Hi Light Byte,
After deploying this backup tool we found that most of the users did not use it. (It requires Outlook to be closed, and take far too long time to complete the evry day full backup.)
Also the few users that attempted to use it created enough load to the network that many processes seems to be stuck.
A solution that really works for PST file backup must be capable of backing up the PST file incrementally, one like EdgeSafe PST2PST
. This is extremely important because of the widely available multi Giga PST files.
