Firefox is the first browser to have tabbed browsing before IE but any Internet Explorer user who is transitioning from IE7 to Firefox 2 or Firefox 3 would see the difference in tabbed browsing between them. In IE, when you open the link, they are opened in a tab next to the current tab but in Firefox, it would be opened as the last tab.

Internet Explorer firefox

This is one of the feature I would go with Internet Explorer as its really hard to manage when a link opens in the last tab when you are playing with quite a number of tabs.

But as usual, you can bend Firefox to the way you want it. So here is the addon for Firefox 3 which allows to open the links in the next tab to the current tab from which it is clicked.

Tab Control is a very light weight plugin which put the new tab next to the current tab and also has other features like switching to the left tab when you close the current tab, specify the maximum and minimum width of the tab etc.

Note: This plugin is available only for Firefox 3 but if you are using Firefox 2, you may try Next tab but this doesn’t allow you open links in the next tab by default as you have to right click and choose open in the next tab.

This is pretty useful when you have lots of tabs opened. But you can always drag a tab to any location.

@Nirmal, thats what I used to do before but why do that when you can make the Firefox to do that for you?

    3. 3 Madhur Kapoor

This will surely help me. I am an IE user and thinking about switching to FF.

    4. 4 Mr.Byte

@Madhur, I have been a IE user myself so far. Except for the speed I love IE better than Firefox. I don’t know why but my Firefox crashes way more often than IE.

Have you tried Tab Mix Plus?

    6. 6 Silviu

Tab Mix Plus is not updated for Firefox3 just yet

    7. 7 Mr.Byte

      @Silviu, Thanks for that information.

But a Tab Mix Plus dev build is available for FF3. Check the Forums on the home page at http://tmp.garyr.net. Browsing the forums I found the latest dev build of TMP is always at http://tmp.garyr.net/tab_mix_plus-dev-build.xpi.

“Firefox is the first browser to have tabbed browsing before IE ” I object your honour. It was Opera. Tabbed browsing, MDI interface, customisability waaay before eve the advent of Firefox.

@Dr. Suhas Rao, Thanks for correcting me about the tabbed browsing.
And about the crashing, I found out the new Yahoo Mail is what causing the Firefox 3 to crash. As you had mentioned, I guess Yahoo Mail continously checking for new mails is causing the problem.

Thanks a lot for simple thing. Switching tabs by Ctrl T in Tabs Mix drive me nuts

I wonder why the usability engineers of FireFox didn’t implement this by default. I mean, are they blind or what!

It should be obvious that “opening links from current tab” should be next to the current tab. Not only does it make the new tab easier to reach, it also keeps related tabs grouped together.

Mr. J just download the vista Aero theme for FF3 and there you have it. Also you can right click the menu bar click customize and drag the “new tab” button wherever you want.
