Outlook I use Gmail in my Outlook 2007 as many others who love to work in Outlook. Now if you use POP3 or any standalone PST file then its easy to move the PST files from its default folder. Usually the default folder is at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. Under these conditions, all that you have to do is

Close outlook –> Open Outlook default folder location –> Move the pst files to another location where you want –> Open Outlook –> It would say that the pst files are missing –> Browse and point it to the new location.

But this method does not work with IMAP pst files like in Gmail but instead it creates a new one with the same address and downloads all the mails one more time.

So how to move the location of Gmail pst file or any other IMAP pst files?

Close Outlook and wait for a minute so that all the related processes are stopped.

Click Start –> Control Panel –> Mail.

Open Email account in Control panel

Click Data Files.

Data Files in Gmail Outlook

Make sure the gmail account is highlighted and Click Open Folder.

Now you would see Gmail.Sharing.xml.obi and Gmayouraddress@gmail.com-someno.pst

Cut only the .pst file and paste it in the folder where you want to move. Leave the .obi file in the same location.

Note: Don’t try to rename the pst file and it will create a new pst file again with the old name. So you will not be able to move.

After moving, double click the highlighted Gmail account. You will get a warning saying that the .pst file cannot be found.

Click Ok. Now you will be able to browse and redirect to the new location.

Close the Account Settings window and Open Outlook 2007.

You have successfully moved the location of gmail pst or any other IMAP pst file in Outlook 2007.

This tip is tested in Vista and Windows 7.

Note: Unless its done in the exact same order, it will not let you move the pst file and instead create a new pst file in the old location with the old name. If so try doing it again. Also when you move the pst file, DO NOT close the Account Settings Window.

Another Tip: If you are using Gmaill in Outlook, you can setup New Email Notification as Desktop Alert
