Hi I am using Outlook 2007 SP2 on a Windows XP Professional Platform.I am syncing my gmail account with Outlook using IMAP.I have also set up a rule for New item Alerts as described here to alert me when a new mail arrives in my gmail account

I do get the New Item Alerts pop up window when i recieve new mails in gmail but when i click on ‘Open item’ in this window it gives me the following message:

‘The item cannot be opened.It may have been moved or deleted’ .

I don’t understand why i am this message when the mail is still in the IMAP mailbox.Please advise.Thanks.

I do not see the ‘Apply changes to this folder’ option in the Rules and Alerts window as shown in the Second image above.I have Outlook 2007,please advise.

The “Desktop Alert” is different from the “New Mail Notification”. The ‘ghosted’ Alert pops up in the bottom right corner of the screen when a new message arrives and allows you to flag, mark as read and delete the message without having to open Outlook. It can be turned on/off through Tools->Options->Email Options->Advanced. However, it appears to only work with the Default email client, so if you have more than one account only mail through the main one will show up.

“New Mail Notification” is set up by creating a Rule (as described above) to meet certain criteria. It will show the message(s) in a solid window that stays on your desktop until you click on the message. The difference being that the only function of this feature is to alert you to the message and allow you to open it.

Working so far, I also set up for my exchange so I must close the alert window if an email comes in. I would like to have separate alert boxes for each account but this is better than never knowing if Gmail was getting messages.

In Outlook 2010 (beta) there is an option to select ‘Desktop Alert’ as the action when receiving new mail from an account, that way you don’t need to specify a custom msg, it just uses the regular alert you would get from any POP/Exchange Mail.

I can get the New Mail Alert to work perfectly, but somehow the “Dekstop alert”, (little window rising out of the taskbar for a few seconds) doesn’t seem to operate.

Any ideas why?
