How to Transfer Windows 7 Settings, Files and Users? – Windows Easy Transfer

If you have Windows 7 RC and if you want to move to Windows 7 RTM or the Windows 7 Final or later or if you want to move or transfer the Windows 7 Settings, Files or users from one Computer to another, there is an easy way to do it by using Windows Easy Transfer. This is also helpful if you want to save the settings and you want to do a clean install of Windows 7 and then transfer the settings and Files.
So how to use Windows Easy Transfer in Windows 7 to transfer Settings, Files and Users?
[This post is written in a series to help uninstalling Windows 7 beta and clean install 7 RC]
On Computer 1 (Old COmputer)
Go to Start –> Type Easy Transfer –> Click Windows Easy Transfer in the search results.
You will get a welcome message to Windows Easy Transfer. Click Next.

Depending on where you would temporarily save the files and settings, choose Easy Transfer cable or network or external hard disk or USB flash drive.

Initially you would be copying from the old computer, so choose This is my old computer.

It will analyze and present all the data that you might want to transfer. You can also selectively remove the data that you don’t want to transfer.

The files and settings will be saved for transfer.

You can choose to protect that transfer file using a password. But remember to note it down so that you will know when you transfer it to the new computer.

Click Save to save the transfer file. The transfer file will be a single file with the extension .MIG

On Computer 2 (New Computer)
Similarly like you did on the old computer, open Windows Easy transfer and click This is my New Computer.
Click Yes, open the file to browse and open the .MIG file

Choose what files that you would like to transfer.
Click on the advanced option in the above image in case if you want to Map the existing user with the already present user. You can also Map the drives.

Click Save and Transfer. Next you can see what are the files that were transferred.

You can also see a list of programs you might want to install on your new computer.
