Almost all display units that are used currently are either LCD screens or flat screen displays. ClearType from Microsoft is sub-pixel rendering technology used to improve the rendering of characters in these screens.
More information on ClearType from Wikipedia,
ClearType uses anti-aliasing at the sub-pixel level to allegedly reduce visible artifacts on such displays when text is rendered, making the text appear “smoother” and less jagged. ClearType also uses very heavy font hinting to force the font to fit into the pixel grid. This increases edge contrast and readability of small fonts at the expense of font rendering fidelity and has been criticized by graphic designers for making different fonts look similar.
So how to tune a better display in Windows 7 and Vista with ClearType tuner?
To open ClearType Tuner, Go to Control Panel –> Appearance and Personalization –> Display. Click Adjust ClearType text from the left sidebar.
You can also click Windows Start –> Search for ClearType and click to open it.

Check Turn on ClearType. Even if its ON already, proceed forward to tune it to how you like it.

You will be presented with the different monitor options if you have multiple and extended monitors.

Now just choose the resolution from the options presented that looks better for your eyes.

You will be presented with the same options with different settings for 4 times, just choose and proceed.

Click Finish to finish tuning the text on your monitor. If your monitor was not tuned before, you will see the difference on the text being rendered in a way that’s not hard on the eyes.

Very cool. I didn’t even know that this was out there. This will be on my to-do list for the weekend.
