On System Restore, go to System Properties (press WINDOWSKEY + Pause), select System Restore, highlight the appropriate drive, press Settings, move the size slider down. You will have fewer restore points, but use less space. This is a permanent fix. You do not have to go through the steps above every time you run Disk Cleanup. This all works in XP also.
